PostPosted: Sat Feb 26, 2005 2:23 pm    Post subject: RT31P2 cause of bandwidth HOG when 2nd line on call? Reply with quote Back to top

I started ping plotting few days ago (thanks REEBOK) and noticed when line one is on a call and I make a concurrent call using my line two, I get dropped packed on ALL hops and latency goes from 80-100's to over 300's. I tested this and yesterday and today, same issue. Quality of call lot more choppier with both lines going.

here is my setup: Modem-RT31P2-phone 1 and 2

My cable provider has decent speeds 3.0/256 and I verified with Voip speed test that things look decent. Again, I only pick up 2nd line when 1st line has maintained a good call for at least 5 minutes, just to be sure internet connection looks stable (cause, sometimes not).

QoS on RT31P2 is set to 200kbps.

Is there a bandwidth hog issue w/ the RT31P2 ?

just to save someone else time, I did the conversions exactly for these numbers (into kilobytes or K):
each call (including 90kbps bandwidth saver and overhead) 10.9K/s
total of both calls (upload) 21.8K/s
QoS: 25K

so you should be ok, but here's the main question. are either call or your internet connection that you notice (by using it, not by pingplotting it) suffering?
and if you want to do some more tests, what happens when you turn QoS off? you only are using voice qos correct?

First, I am using 30kbps bandwidth saver. the 90 and then the 50 did not seem to work for me. Too much garbled and dropped calls.

Also, only QoS enabled in RT31P2 is Voice QoS, upstream set at 200 (max is rated 256).

In terms of quality when 2nd line was picked up, all hops showed dropped packets (using your previously recommended packet size = 78bytes) in PingPlotter.

Quality of calls became noticiebly choppier, but not bad enough nor consistent....I could still continue conversations.

I under stand how you calc'd the conversions from kbps to Kbytes (by using factor of 8 ) but, how do you correlate this to interpreting my increase in latency (went from lets say 100 to 700, latest check a few minutes ago, as example) ?

note...my config: Modem-RT31P2-DlinkRouter+phones

ok, 30kbps, so you have a lot more room with that qos than you need. I would play around with that (off, 256, 512, and 100)
the increased latency is probably normal. whenever you use your connection, your latency increases. try uploading a file somewhere and then just throw out a ping to yahoo or something. for instance:

uploading a file to my isp:
Pinging yahoo.com [216.109.112.135] with 32 bytes of data:
Reply from 216.109.112.135: bytes=32 time=171ms TTL=49

Reply from 216.109.112.135: bytes=32 time=156ms TTL=49

not doing anything:
Pinging yahoo.com [216.109.112.135] with 32 bytes of data:
Reply from 216.109.112.135: bytes=32 time=47ms TTL=49

forgot to note, if I turn off Voice QoS, loss packets still show...BUT the latencies stay around 100-140 with both lines holding conversations.

Weird.
