I have read of some of the many fax problems people are having, but I'm not sure the proposed solutions apply in my case.

I have two Vonage lines, one dedicated for fax. It is not a special Vonage fax line but a 2nd "regular" line that I use for fax only. The reason I got a 2nd "regular" line is that I wanted to port my old fax number (with a special fax line you have to take whatever number Vonage gives you, it was only $5/month more and worth it to me to keep the number). I spoke with Vonage about doing this before signing up and they said it would work fine.

Well, it hasn't. I seem to be able to receive faxes just fine but I cannot send them. And it would appear to have nothing to do with my fax machine because I have tested the connection by picking up the handset and dialing the fax number I was trying to send to, just to hear what is happening, and the call rings and then there is a click as though it is being answered by the fax machine at the other end, but there is no fax tone "handshake", just silence after the click. I have tried this on both of my Vonage lines calling out on a handset to multiple fax numbers, the same problem occurs every time. I have even used different handsets from different manufacturers, makes no difference. If I immediately call these same fax numbers on a POTS line or my cellular phone I hear the fax handshake, so I know the fax at the other end is working.

My broadband is Comcast cable. I use this fax line for business (again, why I opted for a "regular" Vonage line for the fax so I could port my old business fax number), so it is important I get the fax working properly.

Otherwise I really like Vonage as a voice telephone service, haven't had any other problems. I made a 3-way call the other day and the other parties were amazed at how well they could hear each other, the best 3-way call they had ever been on that didn't go through a conference call service.

I just need to get this fax problem fixed. I cannot adjust the baud rate on my fax machine, but again since I am finding the problem even when I call with a handset I can't imagine the problem is in my fax machine. I haven't tried dialing the *99 prefix yet, I just found this forum and read about this prefix tonight. What is that prefix supposed to do? I also read the tip about using a 2-lead phone cord, I just went and checked and sure enough I am using a 4-lead cord, but it is strung through a ceiling and I can't get a different cord from my adapter to the fax machine -- could I just use a female-to-female adapter at the end and use a short 2-lead cord for the last connection?

Any thoughts, any other ideas? Thanks.

Update: I attached a 2-lead phone cord between the regular line and the fax machine, no change, but then I also dialed *99 before the fax number, and a number I have been unsuccessful in connecting to did connect and fax properly. Don't know yet if this solves the problem with all numbers. Still curious what the *99 actually does.

Thanks.

I am having the same problem with Faxing. Receive fine but can't send. I have an officejet 6110 so no baud controls. I have not tried the *99 but will report back. I am using a 2 pair telephone cord so I don't think that has anything to do with it. It just doesn't make sense why all these people in the forums can receiving incoming faxes but have so many issues sending. The modem is the same that sends and receives obviously. I have also turned off ecm as they suggest in vonage's support area. It did not make a difference.

I have a couple of officejet 7110, that were set to connect at highest speed 33K, set it down to 14.4K and now able to send and receive. HP 6110 should have options to connect at highest speed I believe in these inkjets it is parameter 153 and 159 to send and receive should be set at 0.

When trying to get my DirecTivo unit to work over a Vonage line, I was told the *99 gave a "heads up" that a data call, instead of voice, was about to take place. I have found over the past 3 months that it is not 100% reliable, but it is reliable enough to satisfy my daily calls. I was also told that by turning down the max connect speed would increase the chances of a modem call working.

So, when I started trying to fax I used the same *99 and again it works some to most of the time. The problem I'm having is that after sending a fax the line is not disconnecting properly. I don't yet know if it is a problem with the Vonage line or the old fax/modem I pulled out of the closet and stuck back in my PC.

I've been working all day to get this fax working. I have an HP Officejet 5510 and it DOES tell me to use a 2-wire phone cable which I did but it didn't help. Getting 388 errors when trying to fax. The forum saved my sanity! I dialed *99 and entered the fax and fax sent successfully. Thanks to everyone participating.

I have been able to fax successfully using the *99, but it only worked for me with the Motorola VT1005 TA. I tried faxing with the Linksys wireless router with integrated TA but it never worked. What TA are you folks using successfully? Question
