PostPosted: Fri Feb 25, 2005 12:24 pm    Post subject: How can I have Vonage change my packetization? Reply with quote Back to top

I want to lower this to 10ms, I have a DirecTiVo and am getting about 10% success in my calls, Id like to get a little better 50% so the Nag screen dosen't come up.

I don't have windows or I would just setup serial over PPP to get the calls working.

Anyway, I have called tech support several times this week with no answer, I have waited for about 6 hours total on hold.

Any way to get this changed or change it myself?

thanks

you have to call. or email but that will probably take longer.

FYI...you can do the PPP connection via Mac or Linux and not just Windows. Check out Tivo Community for more information. I tried all the codes, changing packetization etc...etc... and nothing worked so I am now doing the PPP connection and it works great.

A friend here at work just got Vonage to make some changes so his HD DirecTiVo could make calls and he said it finally works consistently. He doesn't remember what they did on the Vonage end but he said they game him a dialing prefix to use that modified the way TiVo dials out.

They probably gave him the modem slow down codes, unfortunately these does not work on a Series 2 DirecTiVo

rlstjohn>

I will check the PPP thing out on tivocommunity. Like I said I am getting 1 out of 10 calls through, so I think the packetization will help a lil better call success rate (so I heard from others in my situation)

If its a simple 10ms change and I can get 50/50 or so I am good to go, if not I will hack my TiVo probably to 4.0 and get the USB working and just get a USB to ethernet adapter to run to my router 24/7

Unless the new 6.2 updated makes the USB ports work Very Happy that would be heaven!!

Oh you are right, he says they slowed it down to 9600 and it worked like a charm. Sorry that won't work for you.

On the other hand, hack your DTiVo to 4.0 and you get Home Media Option, too.

Don't know what ATA you have, but supposedly having your Tivo prefix a *99 will make Cisco (Linksys) boxes go to from 20 to 10 (it was over in the "Fax, Tivo & Alarms" forum (http://www.vonage-forum.com/forum9.html)).

I've got an older ReplayTV that is also modem-only... I've gotten it to connect a few times (and even then the call drops during download). I've run the gamut of speed settings, all the way to 9600... with the *99 prefix, I did get the best connect yet (at 24k no less)--a full 5-minutes last night (I've only been fighting this for two days now as my guide info just ran out Wednesday)...

I'm also fighting with line noise (Linksys PAP2) which could be part of the problem. Not about to give up yet an buy a new ReplayTV or TiVo that has direct ethernet just yet (maybe in a few more days though...).

Good luck...

I don't hear much line noise, how do you tell?

Anyway, it still sounds better than my land line phone did.

When I get a connection it usually takes and can stay connected 20+ minutes no problem.

I have a PAP2 and haven't had any luck with *99. Th best method for me is no prefix and just the 11 digit number (numbers in NY seem to work better)

I tried dialing around 5 times tonight and the 5th time it connected and downloaded data for around 15 min and finished with a 'successful' call.

I am going to try the reverse DSL filter trick, if that doesn't work I will get an external modem and be done with it.

I wish the DirecTiVo's could just use the USB ports so I could connect a USB>Ethernet adapter and be done with all this!
