I just discovered Vonage today and am trying to decide if I should sign up for this service.

My primary reasons for doing this would be to get the long distance savings ( I would go with an unlimited package) and also to get a 416 number since most people I call are in that area but I am just outside the GTA so is is ld for them to call me.

I have some questions I hope someone can answer.

1 I have a D-Link Router will this cause and problems or will I have to do any funky configurations? I am hoping for a simple plug and play solution.

2 What effect does other internet activity (downloading, surfing etc) have on the phone quality.

3 How good is the phone quality. I have heard that it is hard to talk when the other person is talking - i.e there is a delay or something. Is this true?
I need the phone quality to be as good as Bell.

4 Since I live outside the 416 area code is there an extra charge to have a 416 number? Is this considered a "virtual" number??

I know I have some other questions but can't think of them now.

I am in Cambridge and have switched to the Voip offering from Vonage.

Most recent routers should not require configuration to allow Voip. If your router has firewall settings, these may need to be modified to allow the Voip traffic. My setup has a Netgear router and all I simply had to do was to connect the Voip hardware, setup the account, and I had working voice phone in under 5 minutes. Really quite simple.

Since I am outsie Toronto, and many of the people that would call be are in Toronto I setup a 416 virtual number. This took less that 2 minutes and it was working.

I have encountered some minor issues with 2 phone calls so far, but other than those the clarity has been excellent. The biggest unknown factor is the reliability of the actual internet connection. It is this that will determine how good the overall call quality is.

I do quite a bit of downloading, there are 2 other computers sharing the same internet connection. So far I have seen any problems caused by the traffic on the other computers. The Voip hardware I have is the Linksys PAP2, it has no Qos and sits behind my router. I would expect the hardware with QoS to be less succeptable to packet loss due to local traffic.

So far I give the service a thumbs up.

Thanks for the input. I appreciate it. My big concern is voice quality and it sounds like you are having no real issues there.

I just thought of another question. If I turn my internet connection off and someone is trying to call me will it go straight to voice mail or will they just not get any connection at all?

I always turn my connection off when I go to bed or if I leave the house for a long period of time.

if the only number you want is a TO number, then that will be your bumber, there is no extra charge, you choose your first number form any avail in Canada as part of yoru rate plan, if you wanted an extra number for incomming calls from other area's, then you pay, those are called Virtual Numbers...

this depends, you can have it go directly to voicemail, or forward to another number you have set as forwarding, or they have an option called "Network Availability Number" and that number youc an set to say your cell phone, or landline phone, and whenever there is a problem with your internet, power, or Vonage, it will forward to that number w/o yu having to log in and set it to change.. if you hae the Network Avil # set, it will not go to Voice mail, if you have regular call forwarding set, that will tkae over the Net. Avail. # and the VM..
