PostPosted: Thu Feb 24, 2005 7:56 pm    Post subject: diablo II online game problem Reply with quote Back to top

My son can't seem to stay connected in Diablo II. He just got it yesterday and I'm trying to figure out where the problem is.

Our configuration:

Linksys/Vonage RT31P2 ----> Linksys Speedbooster G WRT54GS -----> all computers connecting wirelessly.

My connection is pretty stable. Occassionally it will drop but find itself again. He says he can't be online in the game for more than 15 minutes before it boots him.

I don't have any port forwarding, etc., going on. It's all pretty much default. Now, my husband plays WWII online just about all the time, but he's hardwired into the RT31P2.

Any advice, places to look, setting suggestions appreciated!

tia,

is there any type of error message with it? unless he's hosting the game (which there is a thread about diablo 2 and hosting) port forwarding shouldn't matter.

I just asked him and he says that it sometimes says "failed to load" and then it says "failed to connect."

I did see the part about hosting, but no, this is just going to the Battle Arena, I think he said it is? Now, I will say his computer was acting strangely with the wireless connection last night and I rolled it back to a "pre-Diablo" set point and it was fine. I'm trying to find anything in Google that might tell me if he needs more RAM (has 512) or anything that might be the key. It's not practical to run cable to his box like we did in our old house.

Thanks for replying. I guess if the port forwarding doesn't matter unless he's hosting I'll have to keep digging!

is he even going through the rt31p2? if so you must have a wireless router after it. is that how your setup is?

Yeah, see the configuration in my first message --

Linksys/Vonage RT31P2 ----> Linksys Speedbooster G WRT54GS -----> all computers connecting wirelessly

(which was an error because my husband's computer is straight in the RT3. But we've got four desktops wirelessly accessing at various times and then my notebook computer sometimes.)

I think I may have found something worth trying -- firewall settings in XP post SP2. I'm going to go upstairs and see if I can tweak those settings for Diablo and see if the connection holds. Not sure that's it, but I found an article that said it affected many online games.

Thanks!

Only twice? You're still batting a pretty good average.

My husband came downstairs and says not to mess with the firewalls; things it was signal strength. The 16yo had moved the box to a spot that was tanking the signal. It's not fabulous even where we originally set it up, but I've got him testing now. Saw a range extender for $80, so I may get that for the upstairs to help out their signal anyway.

Thanks again!

I play WWIIOL all the time. If your husband plays Axis, sell his computer.
