cboston, thank you for the offer. I passed my CCNA last September and the test didn't go into detail on all of the access-list parameters, just the basic ones so it's always great to learn more. Our team leader is preparing for his CCIE exams this year so I will bug him first since he is three doors down.

Good luck tonight. It's great to have someone with your experience on the forum.

Well I am by far not an expert, I just have hands on mostly through out the years very little formal training. I got my CCNA and CCNP many years ago. Mostly I just read and reasearch what I need when I need it. Google is a wonderful thing.

I know this is an old thread, but I wanted to add my comments in case someone else stumbles across this when looking for help.

A Cisco IOS router does not operate like a traditional firewall and will NOT work with Vonage even if it's been configured to operate with common Internet traffic (TCP/UDP).

IOS without a firewall feature set will only use access lists to restrict traffic and will require the ports lists to be permitted inbound. Because it's all UDP traffic, even a permit rule with the established function configured will only operate until the timeout period expires, which may not work consistently.

IOS with a firewall feature set (CBAC being the feature needed) still requires a non-default inspect command to be added:

"ip inspect name <WORD> sip"

I have a Cisco 1720 with a wic1 enet and I have no problems. I do not have any fw commands in there but I do have acl's.

cboston, sounds as though you and some others are using an IOS based router as the internet border. I'm in the process of throwing the Vonage router behind a 3620. I used the 3620 to terminate VPN client sessions so need it to be first in line to the internet.

The problem I'm running into is crappy upstream quality when I generate even mild traffic. DSL speed is 768/128. I had planned on 3 things to do:

1) QoS with "service-policy output" on the Internet facing address:

2) Shaping with "rate-limit output" on the Internet facing address:

3) Port Forwarding

Seems as though #3 is a bust. What else are you doing to keep the quality up?

As a reference, when I have the Linksys device connected directly to the DSL modem, quality is excellent.

Much obliged

You upload leaves much to be desired. I would try to upgrade that service or find another isp.

I'm pretty sure this might help:

This is only a link for documentation, not an advertisment!

A Cisco IOS router does not operate like a traditional firewall and will NOT work with Vonage even if it's been configured to operate with common Internet traffic (TCP/UDP).

IOS with a firewall feature set (CBAC being the feature needed) still requires a non-default inspect command to be added:

"ip inspect name <WORD> sip"

Not quite so. IOS with or without the FFS will use access-lists to restrict traffic, but with the FFS, you get stateful inspection and you don't have to add to your inbound (from the Internet) ACL for traffic initiated from the inside of your network that is being inspected (or vice-versa). You can only use the "established" keyword with tcp rules, so I'm not sure where you're going with that with respect to udp.

IOS, with or without the FFS, has no requirement for adding inspections. If you have no ACLs on your interfaces, you don't have to do anything at all. Or if you do have an inbound ACL you can still just add the required permissions (for response traffic) for Vonage to work, regardless of the FFS.

Sure, this is what I use. Just a few notes, Fastethernet0 is my Internet facing interface. Also, you really don't need to tag sip with dscp cs3 or rtp with dscp ef as it'll be ignored upstream, but I put it in just for completeness.

class-map match-any call-signalling
match protocol sip
class-map match-any voice
match protocol rtp audio
!
!
policy-map voice
class voice
set dscp ef
priority 90
class call-signalling
set dscp cs3
priority 15
class class-default
fair-queue

interface FastEthernet0
service-policy output voice
