PostPosted: Wed Feb 23, 2005 12:52 pm    Post subject: Comcast + DLink DCM-202 modem +RT31P2 - anyone? Reply with quote Back to top

I am planning on dumping my current cable provider and going to Comcast in two weeks. For the same price ($45.95), Comcast shines in terms of speeds (3.0/256 vs 1.5/2.56) - plus next month Comcast goes to 4.0/384. Well, I am contemplating getting the DLink DCM-202 cable modem from Costco for under $50 (after rebates). Has anyone used this modem with Comcast and the Linksys RT31P2 ?

A side note, I am also trying out Comcast b/c my current cable provider will not work with me to address the latencies I have been seeing mostly at the level3 servers (used ping plotter to determine this). I am betting on the fact that Comcast would help address latency issues more adequately since they have more technical resources (my current provider is a small-shop outfit) and have more clout - that is if latency becomes an issue w/ Comcast Hi-speed. Any thoughts?

I just ordered Vonage and just last night replaced my cable modem with the DLink DCM-202. Very curious if this combo is working well or not.

I did read on Newegg.com that a buyer of the DCM-202 returned his bacause it was causing problems with Vonage.

Comcast will supply you with a Motorola SB5100 SURFboard for about $3.50 per month in rent. Or buy one, prices range from $62 to $90. However, they can handle a lot. You might care to look into this as an alternative.

I'd rather own than rent.

But...open to suggestions. However, why do you recommend Motorola. Thoughts?

Personally, I've used a lot of DLink had no problems. Seems there is often a deal to be had with DLink prices on the web which also makes them more attractive.

A quick search on Google yields the SB5100 pretty much as the best available Cable Modem. Its why I bought one for Myself and love it.

hmmm... any ideas of where to get a good deal on this unit?

Also, any good ideas for getting setup when the Linksys unit arrives. I've heard a real mix about Vonage in regards to service, etc. So...I'm going to give it a shot. Curious if there are any tweaks or anything to consider when setting up.

your best bet is to wait a few days and test it yourself.
as far as tips and tricks, the main one is to give the device time when you plug it into the power and internet for the first time. make sure the power light stops flashing before you start messing with anything. besides that, it's (usually) a simple installation and all directions can be found at vonage.com.

Several of us have had to call to have the Output power (FX Gain I believe) turned up on our units because people we called said we sounded faint or soft.

Things I did to make mine Perfect:

Ring Voltage Increase
MWI Settings Adjusted
Output Power Level Increased
Shorted RJ-11 in port 2 to stop phaser noise.

When you get the system online call some of your friends and inquire about how you sound to them to see if you need this done. Also Try getting a Voicemail, deleting it and then seeing if your MWI indicators go out.

Last but not least come here to look if you dont think something's right. I can guarantee you Reebok or one of the others can help get you pointed in the right direction.
