Ever since I got my Linksys RT31P2 the internet light blinks rapidly/constantly. It does this even if my computer is shutdown and I am not on the phone. Is this normal?

The Internet light on my RT31P2 doesn't blink constantly, maybe once every minute or so. I guess it is making sure it is still connected to the Internet? If I understand correctly, the Linksys device is what sends the dialtone to your phone, and it wouldn't want to send a dialtone if the connection to Vonage weren't good...

Just guessing, others here would know more than me.

It makes sense that the internet light would blink on occassion to make sure it is still connected with Vonage; however, I am concerned that mine is acting oddly. The power, ethernet, and phone lights all behave normally. It is just that internet light that blinks constantly/rapidly even when I am not actively transmitting data (computer shut down and no phone call). The "data" light on my cable modem blinks constantly/rapidly too in conjunction with the internet light on the linksys blinking. That tells me that the linksys and cable modem are "talking" constantly even though I am not actively transmitting data. Still wondering if this is normal or if I should make the dreaded call to customer service?

Thanks dconnor for letting me know it is normal. Out of curiosity I have a couple questions ....

1) Why would the Linksys RT31P2 and the cable modem need to "talk" to each other constantly when I am not actively transmitting data? This question probably sounds silly to electronics/computer gurus but please enlighten me Very Happy

2) Why would otaku's internet light only blink every minute or so but mine blinks constantly and we both have an RT31P2?

Thanks for the help!

1) Are you forwarding your number for network outages? Have messages in your voicemail?

2) Same as #1 plus you could be getting updates.

All of this is very common

Remember that a cable modem is on a shared network with other modems in your neighborhood or area. There will be a lot of traffic going on with your external, virtual "LAN" that is not related to your modem. The Linksys devices blink when they see network traffic.

Someone on a DSL connection has more of a dedicated or private connection back to a router at the phone company so you only see your own traffic and thus less Linksys light blinking. I'm going to assume that otaku is either on DSL or a cable network without many subscribers.

My cable connection looks pretty dead in the daytime but gets real active when kids get out of school in the afternoon. Mind you, the bandwidth is so massive that I don't see slow-downs, just more activity.

Vonage has to constantly Ping your device more than likely to make sure it is active and online.
