I don't have a dedicated fax line. I have a Sharp UX-B700 fax machine. It can tell the difference between an voice call and a fax. If I pick up the phone on another extension and it is a fax it will take the fax. Also if my Panasonic answering machine picks takes the call and it is a fax the Sharp will get the fax. It has a feature called "Fax Signal RX" that can detect a fax when the machine is set to TEL Mode (Manual Receive).
The only issue is when I send a fax from my computer I have to unplug the fax phone line so that it won't take my own fax.
I still use my answering machine and only use voice mail when I'm on the line and don't want to answer call waiting. |

I used my primary line for faxing for the last two years and really never had to many problems. Occassionally I would have drops but not to the point that it was an annoyance.
I DID just add a dedicated fax line yesterday because I am working from home and need to be able to receive faxes automatically 24/7 from my clients. I use my computer for faxing and I didn't like having to manually receive each fax because it meant I had to be here. I did not like leaving it in automatic receive when I left because it would answer every call and drive my folks crazy who live on the other side of the country - costing them LD charges. |

I have a multifunction HP machine.
I can send faxes with no problem. But when I try to receive faxes, the machine says "connecting" but then voicemail takes over and I cannot recieve the fax.
Any ideas, other than disbling voicemail?
Thanks |

If your using Vonage for business then their TOS requires you to have the Small Business Package. That comes with a separate Fax line doesn't it? |

You should consider getting a free efax number for incoming faxes. Then for outgoing use most any standard fax machine as outlined here.
This is a nice work around for the incoming issue and the price is right - FREE
ATT Callvantage is marketing better faxing capabilites if faxing is a huge issue this may be an option.

I've got a Brother MFC 3220C (which I'm not that impressed with, but I bought it cheap from a friend who was emigrating).
Anyway, right now, we've still a regular phone line we can use as we're with BellSouth (and using DSL).
Their unlimited nationwide calling plan alone costs more than Vonage Residential so I'm saving money already. We're moving later this year, and we've already decided to go for cable. We'll be saving a further 30+ bucks a month by doing away with BS altogether, so will look at a $9.99 fax line then, and we'll still be saving.. |

When I was thinking about ordering Vonage I called them and asked them whether you could use a fax machine on a voice line and they said yes |
