I would like to be able to use a dialup modem through my vonage service.
Why on earth would you want to do something stupid like that?
I had broadband and a local telco line.
I would use the local line to test dialup modems, work on friends modems, and some specialized dialing into our mainframe.
So I figure I could connect my modem like any phone device in my house to the vonage system (I got rid of my local telco). The modem and vonage shouldn't know the difference.
It doesn't seem to work. I've also seen people having problems using a fax. I'm betting the two things are the same type of problems.
Anyone have any ideas and/or explain why this doesn't work.
Thanks |

Modems won't usually work. There are several reasons. One is that VoIP is not the same quality as regular lines. Your ear may not notice, but your modem can. Same goes for latency.

Try adding this to your modem init string "n0 s37=9" for 9600 baud.
Let me know if that works and any other tricks you may discover.

I have found that a WinModem (emulated with software) will not work. I replaced my WinModem card with a UART (hardware) modem card. Mine is a 3Com (identified by Windows XP as USRobotics 56K Voice PCI) and when I dial I always use the prefix *99 before the phone number. It works most of the time. But not always! |

I was having trouble dialing into a remote system using my analog modem and it was not connecting at all but then I put the *99 in front of the number I was dialing and it worked!!! Saved me a lot of headaches. |

first try this...no, wait...have 2 shots of quadruple distilled vodka, then...............................................
*99,*67 then your dial up number.
if that fails, try this...
*99,*67 then your AREA CODE followed by a comma.
example:
*99,*67,612,xxxxxxx
dont forget your commas!!!
now i love my VONAGE |

i just thought i'd say that i get faster speeds on dialup (53k) over vonage than i got back when i had verizon (26k) ... my verizon line always had static on it as i live in a rural setting...
i have to use dialup to connect into work occasionally as they don't give me access through a vpn..
sometimes the vonage + dialup will get disconnected if my cable modem provider isn't giving me the best speeds but overall it works pretty good.. |
