PostPosted: Sun Feb 20, 2005 12:50 pm    Post subject: Lot of noise on line Reply with quote Back to top

Just installed my Linksys RT31P2 phone adapter and plugged a phone directly into the phone adapter. I noticed that there is a lot of "hissing" noise or static.
Then disconnected the POTS line outside and plugged a phone cable to one of the wall jacks in my house and waited 5 minutes for all the phone jacks in my house to get a dial tone and all of them were working.
But still a lot of static. I also noticed that the static is intermittent. When I pick up the phone, the dial tone is "clear" ,but as soon as I dial a phone #,I can hear static.
I know it is not the phone connection inside, becuase I have the same issue if I connect several different phones directly into the phone adapter.

I ran the new Vonage® Voip Speed Test and here are th results.
Download 9,377,304 bps
Upload 940,816 bps
QOS 98%
RTT 41 ms
MaxPause 47 ms

My ISP is Optimum Online.
Cable modem is SA WebSTAR DPC2100.
I have a Linksys BEFW11S4 wireless router plugged into the phone adapter for my wireless network.

I have enabled Voice Qos on the phone adapter and the QoS Upstream Rate is 256 Kb.

What can I do to reduce the static on my line ?

Any help is greatly apreciated.

Thank You,
Shahtech

try unplugging your adapter from your ethernet handoff and listen for static. It may be caused by a bad adapter or the positioning of the adapter and/or wiring.

Martlet,

Thank you for your suggestions.
I unplugged the eternet connection from the cable model to the linksys phone adapter and then I did not notice any static.
The wierd thing is that even when I disconnected the ethernet cable on the linksys phone adapter, I had a disltone on the Vonage line.

I have the Vonage phone adapter right next to my cable modem and it is sitting in upright position.

You had a dialtone on the line even when the adapter is completely disconnected from your network?

Hmmm. Is the adapter still plugged into your house wiring? If so, is it possible that you haven't completely disconnected the wiring from the local CO?

It does sound like the line is still live through your old telephone network. This is dangerous because you could damage the terminal adapter connecting it up to the same line where you already have service. If a call should come in on your old POTS line, it would send 98 volts AC through the line to create the ringing of your phones. WHAM! Your ATA would be dead with that much voltage going through it.

Please make sure that your regular phone line is disconnected.

Note: It is possible to still get a dialtone from the ATA if you turn off the modem. It takes a few seconds before the ATA realizes that you have no network connection. It is the ATA that provides you with your dialtone and busy signals.

I have made sure that my line from the CO is disconnected.

This may be the reason.
Now when I disconnect the ethernet cable from the phone adapter to the cable modem and wait 30 seconds, the dial tone is gone.

Also tried plugging an extra phone into line 2 and left it off the hook. I still have the noise.
If i listen carefully, I can hear faint music playing and then someone talking.
I have rebooted my cable modem and phone adapter several times.

That sounds like radio interference. Make sure that your cables to and from your ATA are not touching any other types of wires. Use good quality phone wire too. Using cheaper wire might mean that your wire is not shielded and it could be acting as a radio antenna which would pick up radio signals. Don't plug cordless phone bases near the ATA. Try to separate equipment plugged into the same electrical outlet that your ATA is plugged into.

If you are using a cordless phone, the other voices you are hearing could be a neighbor using their cordless phone on the same frequency. If this happens again, press the CHANNEL button on your phone to switch channels and see if it stops the interference.

Today the noise seems to be "tolerable".
I tried calling Vonage tech support and was on hold for 50 minutes, before my wife rebooted the cable modem (not knowing that I was on the Vonage line) and the call got disconnected.
I sent them 2 e-mails and got an auto-reply. It has been 24 hours since my e-mail and no one has either called me or e-mailed me.
I guess what I heard was correct. Vonage tech support is terrible.
Looks like Vonage is not able to handle their growth.
I m still trying the Vonage service. If the noise issue continues, then I will not switch my POTS line.

I have a questions to all the other Vonage users.
Which phone adapter has the least problems ? I got the RT31P2.

I had the old Cisco ATA186 units for 18 months. Just got the RT31P2's on Saturday. Once they downloaded the new 1.27.01 firmware (automatically) upon connection to the internet, everything has been working just fine. I like the RT31P2 units but have them behind my Linksys WRT54GS router. I'm running the Sveasoft Alchemy firmware on the Linksys router. I don't route any data traffic through the RT31P2 Vonage routers.

I'm please with them and not having any trouble.
