I was intrigued by a post that I read earlier today. The post in question was discussing the odd habits of one of our favorite features, Vonage Voicemail Plus. I just had to look into it. Please understand that I am proposing a critique, here, and not a complaint.

So how does one setup Voicemail? Better still, how does a caller use it? I searched for some Vonage provided operating information. Conclusion, there is one "User Guide" and one "Set Up Quick Card". The User guide was, in my opinion, useless, as it would not tell me so much as how to record a greeting. The Set Up Quick Card was a two page flow chart consisting of no less than 39 separate functions.

Several of the flow chart branches, when followed by my telephone keypad came to dead ends. The Normal Greeting Recording displayed this peculiarity. After one records their greeting, they can 1) Review it, 2)Re-record it, 3) delete it, or 1) Review it, etc. There is no exit from that loop. In fact, that entire string of functions 1,2,3,4, and 5 have no exit. You have no option except to hang up the phone and redial if you have more programming to be done.

In the end, I left a message for myself. Voicemail reacted in the normal fashion. However, when I went to check the message that I had just left, there was nothing there. Very interesting, I thought to myself. If I can't leave a message for myself, how many messages have I missed in the past from people trying to reach me?

If I were to go into more detail describing all the other peculiarities that I found, you would surely get bored by a Post way too long. In the end I gave up in frustration. I left an e-mail for technical support for all it is worth.

That's odd. I never had a problem.

My voice mail worked from day one, and had a standard account number greeting. The first time I called it from my home using *123, I was automatically put into a set up tree that took me through all the steps, including deleting, re-recording, and saving answer messages.

I just followed the voice prompts until I was done.

I have had this service for three weeks. I admit that I am single, and not too many people have this number yet. But I have not heard anyone complain yet about VM. I too called the *123, and thought the setup was easy. However, I also agree that the documentation on VM is not good at all. I guess that I should feel fortunate.....I have not had any trouble with my Vonage line at all.

Gentlemen, did you read the topic in discussion here? There is no mention, anywhere in the topic about problems with Voicemail. If fact the term itself, "problems", is not mentioned in the topic, never. You guys missed the POINT! of the entire discussion.

Let me demonstrate the point of the topic, and you are welcome to join in. Here is the hypothesis. I say that some functions of the Vonage Voicemail system are either too complicated for most people to set up or are too tenuous to use.

Now, I challenge you to prove or disprove the hypothesis. Therefore, set up your Vonage Voicemail to:

1. From 8:00 PM to 8:00 AM play a scheduled greeting that says "Good Night" to all callers every Saturday night.
2. From 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM play a scheduled greeting that says "Good Day" to all callers every Sunday morning.
3. Explain where you found the instructions to do this.
4. If it can't be done, explain why.
5. If you were successful, explain how.

Are there any takers?

Why? The poll asked for my opinion. I gave it.

The Poll is not in discussion here. It makes for an interesting thing to look at, but the topic is the object of discussion. That is why it is called a topic or if you prefer, the post. Definition: to inform, discuss, etc. Are you going to take the challenge?

I thought your post was well written. It asked how to set up voicemail, and how do callers use it. We responded how we did it, and that we have not had problems. I have called my voicemail for reminders to add to my calendar when not at a computer, and have not had any complaints from people leaving me messages. I didn't see anywhere in there a point on how to schedule greetings. I assumed you just wanted help in basic setup.[/u]

Well, Jayhawker, thank you for the first non-crass reply. As I said in the beginning of the post, it was a critique, nothing more. Just an observation on how the programming of Vonage Voicemail was functioning. I have no complaints either, it works fine for me. However, as I reported, there are 39 separate functions within the program, most of which, of the majority of users are unaware of their very existence. As I found out through my experiment, there is much, much more than just dialing *123.

We are all used to retrieving and saving messages; creating, reviewing, and deleting outgoing greetings; selecting the canned message with our name imbedded in it; but there is more in there. There is no manual that I am aware of. Someone out there created this program and left us to fend for ourselves to discover the other, hidden, functions such as the "Scheduled Greetings" program section. It's a mystery to me and I won't be holding my breath waiting on an instruction manual, or to create one myself, but I am thinking on it.

So, if I take it as it is, I'm happy, and I've been using Vonage for over four months without a single mishap or complaint. I hope you remain as satisfied with your service as I am.
