Was wondering if anyone ever used a phone modem through a Vonage number. I am working on a friends computer and she uses dial up internet and her modem quit. Found out her modem is bad so was trying my old US Robotics external and it dials out ok, when the other side answers it sounds like it starts the usual handshaking for about 1 sec - then silence. Could this be trying to use a Voip system? |

Its Voice over IP and not Data over IP. You might make it work marginally at 9,600 baud but you'll never have decent service with a dial-up modem (if any service at all) using Voip. |

It worked!
Set the modem to 9600 and used *99 in dialing out and modem connected fine. Just for fun, I reset the modem to 115000 and dialed out with the *99 and it connect but at 31200. No problem as I was just testing the modem and computer for my friend - I have broadband and could never go back to dial-up!!
Thanks alll |

I posted a similar message to yours. I didn't see the "Fax - Tivo" section and your posting. Don't you hate people that double post. Anyways, What does *99 do? Thanks |

Thanks | *99 sets your ATA to the highest bandwith setting per call. If you have the highest setting chosen on your dashboard it does nothing, just makes you feel like something's happening. |
