I am wondering if I will improve my Vonage call quality by upgrading my Motorola cable modem from the SB4100 (old) to the SB5100. I have the 6mbs/768ks service, but I am concerned that there is jitter in the system as I get numbers between 3.4 and 3.7 MOS using http://testyourvoip.com

Does anyone know if I would get an improvement, why, and how much?

I am using the Vonage RT31P2, and it has made a big improvement already, but while I am upgrading, I'm looking at the entire configuration.

I am concerned also about other Apps like IChat and the Xten Softphone that run over the LAN.

need some more info. what are your detailed results from testyourvoip? what are your speed test results from http://www.vonage-forum.com/voip-speed-test and run the line quality and such tests at dslreports.com. many people use the SB4100 with no problems.

I sort of had the same question. The Vonage test states the following for me:


Download 2,725,600 bps
Upload 369,416 bps
QOS 48%
RTT 62 ms
MaxPause 438 ms

Would upgrading to the 5100 (from 4100) improve my speeds? Since I have comcast, my download speeds should be double this ..

My Results with a SB 4200 are:

Download 1,747,544 bps
Upload 234,016 bps
QOS 96%
RTT 74 ms
MaxPause 50 ms

Looks like its slower than what you are getting. These numbers are fairly consistent these days and maybe I should be looking into a new Moto modem. Does your computer speed have something to do we these numbers as well?

Is this an "acceptable" range, or should I consider modifying some settings?

depends on your call quality. if it's fine, then your results are fine. it's mainly a matter of treating your call quality, not treating the tests.

if you go to http://www.vonage-forum.com/voip-speed-test/ and scroll down you will see Vonage Voip Speed Test Results - Explained & Discussed in large letters. unfortunately, it's really only an explanation of QoS, I've yet to see an explanation of RTT or maxpause.

Mine are always this pretty much.

Download 2,884,392 bps
Upload 252,064 bps
QOS 99%
RTT 53 ms
MaxPause 16 ms

High max pause will eventually lead to periodic conversation drops.

RTT (Round Trip Time) is probably giving time results from what server they run the test from or something.


My calls are always perfect since my connection is so solid.
