PostPosted: Thu Feb 17, 2005 8:34 pm    Post subject: Phone adapter only works behind router Reply with quote Back to top

My phone adapter will not work when it is directly connected to my cable modem. It will access the internet, but it will not connect to the the Vonage system. I do not get a dial tone and both phone LEDs blink every 15 secs or so. Also, Vonage customer support is unable to see the phone adapter from their end.

When the phone adapter is placed behind my router, it works perfectly. I get a dial tone and it can access the internet. I really don't want to keep this configuration as the phone adapter will be unable to manage quality of service.

Customer support is stumped and suggested I contact Linksys. I doubt this will help since they will probably just say it is a Vonage issue.

Any suggestions?

Phone Adapter: Linksys RT31P2
Cable Modem: Linksys BEFCMU10 ver. 2
ISP: Adelphia Cable

I have to ask, did you reboot the cable modem when you switched the position of the router and phone adapter? The reboot is necessary for the modem to recognize the new unit.

Well after thinking about, I guess if you can get on the internet with it, it must be prtially working so nevermind the reboot question.

Yeah, have rebooted accordingly.

This configuration works: cable modem --> router --> phone adapter

This configuration, cable modem --> phone adapter , does not provide phone service but will provide internet service to computers connected to the phone adapter.

Customer service doesn't know, anyone have any suggestions?

Well.. Like me you probably had the router before u got Vonage. Somehow the phone adaptor/router is picking up your 1st router settings. The technical guy at Vonage told me that and it was the only way I could get my Vonage to work and that is by using the router I was using.. even factory reset wouldn't solve it so I got over it.. just use the router..

I don't think so. I took the router out of the network BEFORE I installed the phone adapter. There was no way for the settings to get transfered since the router was sitting unpowered on the desk until the Vonage tech suggested that I add it back in the network "just to see what happens".

The problem with getting over it is that it seriously effects quality of service. Having the telephone adapter first in line would allow my existing router to manage all of my network's internal traffic and the phone adapter to manage all of the external traffic to maximize quality. My broadband connection isn't terrible but its far from the greatest, so my Voip traffic needs to be optimized to be feasable for me.

I believe that this is not an isolated problem at all as I have read several threads with others have had the same problem. Usually someone just tells them to put the telephone adapter after the router and it "resolves" the issue. Its really not a resolution though - its more like a bandaid.

What kind of router is it? Do you have a firewall in the router? If so did you try disabling the firewall? Did you try doing a FULL FACTORY RESET on your router?

The router really has nothing to do with it as the phone adapter will not work when it connected directly to the cable modem and WITHOUT a router.

Cable Modem -> Telephone Adapter does provide internet service through the Telelphone Adapter but phone service is inoperable. Vonage is unable to see the telephone adapter in this configuration.

Cable Modem --> Router --> Telephone Adapter provides both telephone and internet service.

Everything has of course been rebooted, soft reset and hard factory reset as I have worked with customer service for 4 hours with two different telelphone adapters. This is the only configuration that works.

As I wrote before, I don't think this is a unique problem at all. From reading other posts this seems to happen a decent amount and the person just ends up giving up and hanging the telephone adapter behind their router. This is a far from ideal solution.

BTW, my router is a Linksys WRT54G - the phone adapter will only work behind this router and not without it.

Could it have something to do with DNS servers not getting plugged into the right spots in the phone adapter? Can you try taking the settings that the cable modem gives to your main router, and plug them into the RT31P2? Set it to static IP, and put in the IP, DNS, Gateway...
Only thing I can think of...
