On my most recent bill from Comcast, I noticed an additional fee for a second IP address. When I called them they said it was for an additional computer. I convinced them I have no additional computer, so they took the charge off. I'm wondering, as I use a router, if they took that as another computer hooked up, or are they attempting to charge extra for the Vonage phone hook up.

Probably when you plugged in the router, it saw a new MAC address and issued a new IP to it. Comcast monitors that now. Normally, if you power down the cable modem first and then plug in the router, this won't occur. They went so far as to provision the cable modems in my area so I can only get one IP address.

You think it might have something to do with Comcast trying sell their own Voip phone service? They have a monthly fee with a limited amount of hours usage. Kind of like a cell phone.

Nah. I doubt it. They're not that smart yet. Give 'em a little while and we'll see.

The big cable companies know that if they try to block or over-charge people with Voip service, the Fed will get involved. They don't want that.

Vonage is currently suing a LEC who blocked them on DSL service they provide. As long as cable companies are regulated as transport mediums, those companies don't want to screw it up by restricting content in the transport. Once common transport is restricted by a carrier, a whole pandora's box will open up in court.

When I switch to a new router, what i will do is clone the mac address of the old router into the new router. This way you will retain the same IP address with comcast, since the DHCP lease ip is based on whatever the MAC address is of the component connected to the cable modem. Very useful if you run servers like i do Wink

Also, if you switched cable modems, and registered its IP address electronicaly, yes this is possible, comcast may call you about it. You may also get charged an additional fee is the other modem isn't "unregistered" etc.

Also, is it really only 5 bucks extra for a second IP, and can you use a second dedicated modem for this IP? If so, thats a bargain Smile And yes, you can use more than one cable modem on one cable line.

At least for Comcast, you cannot use a second dedicated modem for a second IP. If you want to use a second modem then they will have to setup a second account...at least that's what they told me when I wanted to do it.
