Man, I hear you on the Linksys thing. I haven't had good luck so far with mine, either.

Vonage will tell you that they only provide that Linksys unit we both have. They used to send out a Motorola and some folks here have raised a fuss with Vonage to get a Motorola when they have had issues with the Linksys.

There's another Linksys that's essentially the same as what you already have, with the addition of Wireless-G. I think that's only available in retail stores.

The advantage of the Linksys routers is that they conenct directly to your broadband connection and that allows the box to use QoS to manage bandwidth so that your phone service gets prioritized. The Motorola box (or hooking up the Linksys in an alternate configuration) just hangs off your existing router and it's no more important than your PC, so if you're sucking up the bandwidth, your phone connection has to wait in line.

If only I could get this Linksys router to quit resetting itself at random times, I'd be so happy with Vonage.

here's the rundown:
cisco ata186 - original, no longer available anywhere
motorola vt1000/vt1005 - replaced cisco. it does have qos, it does not have to just "hang off"
and now the linksys family:
RT31P2 - what Vonage sends
WRT54GP2 - same as RT31P2 with wireless built in
PAP2 - adaptor that just "hangs off" another router. no qos.

Ah, sorry, I thought the PAP2 was made by Motorola. Thanks.

I alredy tried that advice for the NO DIAL TONE problem...I couldn't figure out if my phone is set to tone or pulse dialing (I have a GE 900mhz cordless phone, it's a modern phone). My guess is that it is set to tone, because in the past, I've used its "touchtone" features with other numbers (like automatic phone machine directories,e tc.)

ALl I know is that when I connect my PC to the Router, I get no Internet feed...and I can't access http://192.168.15.1, and when I do connect PC to the Router, and Telephone to PHONE 1 port, only the ETHERNET 1 light goes on, and it seems to flash at the same exact rate as the "Internet" light does. The POWER light is also constantly flashing, it hasn't stopped doing that since I got the device yesterday (at 12:00 P.M.)

Based on what I've read, If i'm not getting the PHONE light to light up, I'm not connecting to the Vonage network. And if the POWER light keeps flashing, it must have been updating the firmware...but it's possible I unplugged it during that process (I had no idea it was doing that), and that may have messed it up.

Originally, I was able to access http://192.168.15.1 and made no changes (since my IP is obtained by DHCP from Cox). I simply "saved settings", and told me that my computer had to reboot. I did...and that's when problems started.

well...i managed to get Internet feed again from the Router (I first made sure I was getting INternet feed from Cable modem, then restarted the computer with modem directly connected to Ethernet Card, and then plopped in the CDROM, allowed it to "find the connection", and then plugged in the Cable Modem to the Router's "Internet" slot, and replugged ETHERNET 1 to my computer Ethernet card).

Internet is flowing through the Router to my PC...but, POWER button is still flashing like crazy...no phone light. I suspect the firmware process got interrupted.

Is there any way to "reset" (I already held the reset button down for 15 seconds while plugging the device back in) the device so that it can receive a new firmware upgrade? Would that "flush out" the problem from the device.

Tried calling Vonage 3 times...when it asks me to tell them if I have a Linksys device...I do...then I get a busy signal.

Also...although I'm getting Internet feed through the Router, it won't respond to http://192.168.15.1 - which is the address listed on the guidebook. Weird?

Welcome to the club! I have been strugling with the same issue for the last 2 weeks, I have called with the same results you had, faxed. etc..

Finally last night I was able to talk to someone live, but after we went over
the configs a few times..looks like he gave up and hang up.
I have my DSL thru America On line, and probably AOL is the problem
Is anybody out there with a succesfull configuration using AOL ???
I am willing to ditch AOL but I ned to be sure that other alternative will work. Cry

I still have the same problem described above...Internet is working through router, POWER light keeps faslhing, no phne service, no phone1 light (it's off), and no access to the Router via http://192.168.15.1.

My suspicion remains that the firmware update process was interrupted....unless an expert from Vonage can address this issue.

I emailed Vonage...and got one of their "automated replies" and I replied to get a "ticket" for my issue. Calling them leads to the automated directory, which ends in a busy signal when I select "linksys" as my adapter.

I'm "assed out", so to speak...Not getting any help on this issue...and seriously considering reverting to a landline...

It's a shame...i really wanted to try Voip, and it seems Vonage leads all the other ones in savings...but...there is a serious problem when an experieced computer maintenance person (like myself), who worked as a Computer Administrator in Networking computers at the University of Massachusetts, and who is dabbling into Linux...can't get a Router to work with his Voip service. If I'm having these troubles, imagine a person who thinks Microsoft Office is an operating system...and trust me, I've known a lot like that. I use to do Technical Support for all my dorm friends...I was the "go to" guy.

This is not very user friendly, and after repeated attepts on email and phone support...i haven't received a single message from Vonage...

My opinion: Vonage is not ready for mainstream....I'll stick with the landline bigboys (Verizon in my area) for the ease of getting my phone to work. I'll Check Voip in the future, when the technical kinks get worked out...this is too much of hassle just to get my phone to work.

Thanks anyway for the help guys! Sad
