PostPosted: Tue Sep 09, 2003 7:45 am    Post subject: Cable Companies Reply with quote Back to top

I was wondering if anybody has had success in getting their cable company ( specifically Time-Warner ) to give them a credit or refund for the downtime incurred. I've had my cable modem for about a month and Vonage for about 3 weeks. When the modem is up Vonage works great, I'm just trying to see how much I can get from TWC ( it's ben down 90% of the time for the last 2 weeks ).

Also has anybody experienced any backlash from the cable companies because your using Vonage?

Thanks.

Cox cable here in Northern Virginia has always given me credit for outages.

This is both for day for day credits for simple problems or "bigger chunks" for more extended connectivity issues.

I ALWAYS report problems and ask for credit if I have ANY outage. Not only is it good for me, but it'll document outage trends for you specific location AND if it's costing the cable operator $$$, you can be assured they'll do all they can to improve your service.

Also recommend you use a simple utility to continuously monitor your broadband connectivty. I (and Cox Cable) use Pingplotter (http://www/pingplotter.com) but there are several available.

If you are using RoadRunner with Time Warner, they have been willing in the past to give me service credits for days I have partial connectivity due to a system issue. If a service call is needed you'll have to call back after the tech fixes the issue to get a credit for the problem. This is my experience with Time Warner in SE Wisconsin but it may be different for you because TW customer service handles RR service for my area.

If you are using a different provider with Time Warner you may have different luck.

I have had the same luck with Time Warner in SE Texas. I have found that if they have to send out a tech they will give a service credit.

There is no reason for you to tell them you are using Vonage, it is just another internet "application".

I agree - unless they specially add Voip as a regulated service they can't complain. Technically it infringes on the limitation to running a server on the residential connection but I doubt they would even want to complain since having Vonage kind of secures you as a customer of broadband. Explicitly limiting Voip would eliminate a large market for RR and would be very very dumb.

Unfortunately sometimes not so smart people work for large companies.

I have earthlink highspeed cable (via timewarner). I really DOUBT that time warner would put a "cap" on bandwidth due to Voip since, earthlink RESELLS Vonage on earthlink website. But I might be wrong, never know about stuff like that.
I have had a few issues with timewarner cable, they have always been very knowledgeable and nice and have issued credits over the phone just by me telling them the service was down. I give two thumbs up for timewarner highspeed. I was a AOL highspeed person (before earthlink came to the area) AVOID AOL like a plaque!! They are rude, mean, and over bill you. I have been billed for 5 months since I canceled aol service.
Needless to say I dispute charges from aol once a month but got a new credit card number and they somehow charged it on my old card. Now my bank is doing a fraud investigation on them!
