PostPosted: Tue Feb 15, 2005 7:07 pm    Post subject: Anyone using Verizon FIOS with Vonage? Reply with quote Back to top

I was just curious if anyone was using Verizon FIOS (Fiber Optic Internet) with Vonage service. Currently im paying 39.95 a month for 5mbps down and 384 up with RoadRunner (Cablemodem) and see that for 39.95 I can get Verizon FIOS which is 5mbps down and 2mbps up for 39.95. I would figure that the upstream boost would help with the Vonage service although im not having any problems now. Also I see I can get 15mbps down and 2mbps up for 49.95 which would be neat.

I have been FIOS for over a month now. Extremely satisfied. I used to have COmcast (5 down/256 up) for 60$. Now it is 5 down/2 up for 40$!!! (When I called Comcast to cancel, they said they would give me a special for 35$ a month - so I asked why they didn't give it to me all these years when I was paying 60???)
Anyways, I had good Vonage service with Comcast, and I have good Vonage service with FIOS. Did not really notice any difference in call quality - however I am sure that the greater upload bandwidth will definitely help if I am using the Internet a lot.

Just got FIOS yesterday. I signed up for the 15 Mbps FIOS service. I did a speed test using Verizon's own "FIOS Speed Test" and result said speed is only 8Mbps. W-T-F, I paid for 15!

And Verizon's FIOS speed test is from my PC on FIOS to Verizon's Server on Verizon's own network. It doesn't even go out to the internet. So they can't say its something else.

I'm going to complain and if they can't improve the speed, they should not charge me the full $49 a month. They should prorate the cost according to speed! But I'm hoping they can increase the speed somehow. I want to pay but I do want the advertised 15 Mbps speed. I'll even settle for 13 or 14 Mbps but NOT 8 Mbps.

BTW, I have Vonage Voip too. I will hook it up to FOIS tonight and see how it is. Before we had 5 Mbps cable modem service and when my wife called Brazil using Vonage, she said the sound quality was noticble inferior to the land line. I am hoping the sound quality will improve with FIOS. We'll see.

From Verizon's product description page:

"Speed and uninterrupted use of the service are not guaranteed."

Be glad you're not paying for the 30Mbps/5Mbps package.

that's a pretty common occurence and can be greatly affected by your computer settings. check out dslreports.com fios forum for details on how to correct it.

Must you maintain POTS with the Verizon FOIS? I know that in order to have DSL, you must. So to use Verizon's so-called VoiceWing service (overpriced I might add), you must still keep POTS.

I do not have DSL, but friends of mine do and for them to get Vonage is not as good of a deal because they will not sell DSL without POTS. Some LECs do I think, but not Verizon in Pennsylvania.
