fios is actual fiber which requires all new fiber lines be laid in the ground. it has nothing to do with phone service. it's a data service (and thus can be used for Voip) but it's not like dsl and your phone doesn't run over it.

Well that sounds good then. How do you connect to the fois in your home? Is it still through a phone jack, or does it require a newly installed wire into your house?

slight correction there, reebok.
Fibre optic has something to do with your phone - basically fibre optic replaces the copper cable that currently comes to your house.
They replace the standard Telephone Interface terminal with a Optical Network Terminal, and this thing has 6 ports on it. One is a data port (through which the broadband comes thru), 2nd is a TV port (through which ultimately Verizon will distribute television programming) and the other 4 are standard phone ports. So if you wanted regular POTS service, all they need to do is to hook up your internal house wiring to one(or more) of the 4 ports.
Also, Verizon does not require that you subscribe to phone service in order to have FIOS.

Disturbed,
Once they install the Optical Network Terminal outside your house, they run a CAT5e cable from that box all the way to where your computer is located (or wherever you want them to) and install a ethernet jack. Then it is obviously as simple as hooking up the router they provide to this ethernet jack.
It uses PPPoE same as DSL.
