I finally got broadband in my area last week and was the first one hooked up, I signed up for Vonage and love it. I was seeing how fast my connection was using the Vonage Voip speed test http://www.vonage-forum.com/voip-speed-test/ and it came back with 2.47 Mbps download I called tech support for my ISP they said I would get 5 Mbps. They gave me another site to try it came back 4.5 Mbps http://www.aroundtownkc.com/computing/speedtest/ any idea why I would get two diffrent results testing the same connection?

THANKS!!

Some tests just work differently than others. They may be testing other parameters beside speed. The testing website may also be very busy with others requesting speed tests, file downloads, and the like. The best time to run a speed test is late at night when the server is not so busy. Here are a few more to try:

http://www.dslreports.com/stest
http://www.2wire.com

Run these several times and figure the average. Your system may also cause slow connectivity as well. Try the tweak test as well and adjust whatever is recommended. Same with the stest, you may need to upgrade your java applet. Good luck!

Mike

I just ran mine:

The around town gave me 4.4Mbps (much lower than what I truly have)

Our test was:
My Results
Download 6,706,488 bps
Upload 832,872 bps
QOS 69%
RTT 45 ms
MaxPause 16 ms
Vonage Voip Analysis
Given your current Internet speeds, we estimate that your Internet connection can support a maximum of 11 simultaneous high quality Vonage® Voip connections.

Which seems to be much closer to what I really have.

I run the standard Comcast bandwidth. 4Mbps download and 486kbps upload. The Vonage speed test and I don't get along too well. I prefer dslreports testing.

Speed test gives my results as:
Download 501,920 bps
Upload 52,840 bps
QOS 80%
RTT 0 ms
MaxPause 157 ms
and it says I can support 0 connections.
Is the problem the slow upload speed? The difference between the upload & download? The QOS too low?
I am on WiMax in a remote area.

that upload is really bad. you might be able to use the lowest setting in your call quality options (30kbps under bandwidth saver under features when you login to vonage.com)
you should check out your latency too. testyourvoip.com (detailed results) is good for that.

Download speed is affected by a number of factors, including:

ISP's network: How congested their local nodes are, how saturated the circuits are that backhaul traffic from the local nodes to the ISP's core (where traffic is aggregated and sent out onto the internet).

ISP's Gateway: This is your ISP's connection(s) to the internet. Limiting factors are their actual transit capacity (how much bandwidth THEY have available), how saturated those circuits are, latency through their network up to and including the gateway, routing decisions (the network to which they hand off your outbound packets) and route advertisements (what circuits other networks see as the preferred path back to your ISP).

The Internet itself: congestion, latency, routing paths, peering agreements, traffic exchange points, etc., of each network that carries the packets between your machine and the remote host from which you're downloading.

Latency: i.e., round-trip response times. A path that has, say, 10 ms latency can carry traffic faster than a path of the exact same capacity but with 100 ms latency. Why? Because the sending host sends a block of data of a certain size (TCP window), then waits for an ACK (acknowledgement) from the receiving host confirming that it received that data intact. The longer a sender has to wait for the ACK to arrive, the longer it must wait before transmitting the next block of data.

Packet Loss: Lost packets mean the sending host has to stop what it's doing and re-transmit the missing segments.

Generally speaking, you will get faster download speeds from a host within your ISP's network (such as the AroundTown server) than from a host elsewhere on the internet-- unless that host is really busy and/or the pipe feeding it is congested.

So it's perfectly normal to see slower speeds from a download server outside of your ISP.
