PostPosted: Tue Feb 15, 2005 9:09 am    Post subject: Before I return my PAP2 ... Reply with quote Back to top

I have had the Vonage service for almost three weeks now and so far I haven't had any real problems. My peeve is with the amount of static. It's not a huge amount - just a slight hiss that you hear more when the other person isn't talking. I can't do the unplugged phone thing into port 2 as I'm using that for my fax. Most people don't even notice it when they use the phone, but it bugs me.

I called tech support yesterday and he did a bunch of reconfigurations on the PAP2 (I'm not sure what, but he had me unplug it for 30 seconds and when it came back on all the lights were sequencing). In the end, he thought something went haywire with the unit itself, as he was unable to make certain changes. He suggested I exchange it (at Staples where I bought it) for another one.

My concern is I will go through all the trouble of exchanging, calling back in and getting a new PAP2 set up. If the static issue is with the PAP2 itself, will I just be exchanging a static-laden box with another one? Has anyone else exchanged the Linksys and had their static go away? TIA.

there have been a ton of posts about this. some people have boxes that work great or have very little hiss. others are not so lucky. it seems to be hit or miss.

reebok,

You meant "hiss or miss," didn't you? Lol

Linksys acknowledged, their devices have faulty circuitry that causes noise. you can test it by unplugging you device from teh internet, pickup the phone and listen for the noise.

I unplugged the ethernet cable from the PAP2 and the static is still there.

We don't make the devices, but must deal with the fallout.

that's crazy. why should a company give away 100,000 devices for use with their service and expect to deal with problems it causes. especially since articles on vonage.com state "it even beat the landline." I swear, the stupid people out there these days.

Vonagebest:

If they acknowledge there is a problem what is the solution? When can we replace for a "fixed" unit. I understand Vonage doesn't want 150,000 units being returned but like Reebok said, we deserve the "crystal clear" service that was advertised.

I just got off the phone with Linksys, and he explained that any PAP2 newer than 4 months old should not have the hiss problem. As I got mine 3 weeks ago we assumed it was one of the "good" ones. There's always the possibility it had been sitting in storage for awhile, though.

He asked if I could change my QOS or MTU settings on my router. "Huh?" I said, as I'm using an Apple Airport and have never seen these settings, and I believe they are only available through a command line, which I'm not even going near.

I did explain that if I unplug the ethernet from the PAP2, I can still hear hissing (and it does this on EVERY phone I have plugged into it). At this point he said to get it exchanged.

Interestingly, I just spoke with my Mom down in Florida. She called me on the Bell line and I asked her to call me on the Vonage number. She said the Vonage call was clearer. I guess the hiss is only heard at my end.

Well, I just got my linksys yesterday (2-19-2005) from Best Buy and yes there is a hiss (sounds like the wind is blowing in the background).. The people I call says it doesn't bother them but I should would like to get this fixed. I guess I could take the unit back to Best Buy and ask for another one. Has anyone done this?

What do you recommend?
