I bought an RT31P2 from Best Buy on 02/02/2005. It has the hiss which can be reduced by connecting an off-hook phone to the other port. Even worse is a buzz/humming when it is connected to another router.
I chose not to exchange it at Best Buy because I speculated that it was very likely that a second RT31P2 from their stock would have the same problem.
An e-mail to Linksys support on 02/09/2005 was responded to by a human on 02/19/2005. The Linksys tech said that it was a hardware problem and that it could be replaced through a Vonage-customized webpage at:

Almost $100 on your credit card are held hostage until Linksys receives your old router. I just submitted the RMA yesterday, so I don't know yet if the new router will resolve the noise. |

I exchanged my PAP2 a few days ago and i THINK it is quieter. I have replugged and reconfigured just about every bit of cabling but it didn't make any difference. This second unit was also missing a part to let the unit stand on its side.
I'm beginning to think it may just be me. When I use my POTS line I can hear a bit of hiss, and also a local radio station faintly in the background! People I speak to say I sound fine, and a few have said it sounds better than the POTS line. I think it also depends who you are calling. I have one friend in particular who works in an office in downtown Toronto. That connection always sounds bad. Most others are fine. On my last tech support call me said you shouldn't hear ANY hiss if the PAP2 is powered with an UNPLUGGED ethernet cable.
Calling in to have the MAC address updated was a PITA. I lost count of how many different departments they switched me to. |

I've had my PAP2 for a week now and have not heard any hiss, static, pops, etc... maybe a 1/2 sec delay some times (but that seems to have gone away lately) but that is all.
In fact I've (knock on wood) not had any of the problems others seem to be having.
Now if wee could just get a local number here........
