I have an existing wireless G network (DHCP) in my house using the US Robotics G wireless router and cards in the laptop and remote desktop PC. Main PC is direct connected to the router.
Vonage sent me the Linksys RT31P2 router, but I thought I was getting a "standalone" MTA device. Thought that's what I checked, but now am wondering if I was only asked about a wired or wireless router during sign up?
Should I send this back for a standalone, or could I use it with my existing equipment with no speed loss or problems with the home network? I know I could connect a switch to LAN port 1, but does a router count as a switch also?
Possibly set up like this:
Cable modem plugged into the US Robotics wireless router. The RT31P2 connected to ethernet port 1 on the wireless router. Phone connected to the RT31P2. I guess disable DHCP on the RT31P2 also.
Just want to make sure that if it physically works, that I'm not causing any network slowdown or issues or problems with DHCP, etc.
Thanks,
Rick |

There are no longer any stand-alones unless you can find an old Linksys PAP2 somewhere. From your description, you have everything set up correctly except, if I were you I would place the RT31P2 first after cable/DSL modem.
This allows for increased Quality Of Service (Qos) to the phone adapter. Thus, if the RT31P2 is giving too much priority to its 3 WAN ports, you can lower their priority by using the Port-based Qos. You can find this on the Web-based Utility at The Applications & Gaming Tab - Qos function.
This gives you the ability to prioritize between your phone jack and the three WAN Ports to ensure that either your computer, your wireless, or your phone gets the priority that it needs. |

Egg cellent! Thanks for the quick replies. Just made my first call with Vonage...to my wife upstairs.. Call sounded perfectly clear, no noise or anything. She called back and again couldn't tell the difference from a land line.
Currently I have the RT31P2 plugged in to the router. But I'm now going to take the suggestion and put the RT31P2 right after the modem and then plug the router into it.
Thanks for the quick info. |
