for now i keep it like i said in a prev post.. i only use phone a few minutes a month. and that is normally with my cell phone i got the service to learn about it. but everytime i read something here i go and troubleshoot it and see whats up. all and all it's an ok servie. but people shouldnt be relying soley on it. it's too new and too much instability. to me that doenst matter. i never expected it to even work. let alone be as great as it has been.
Vonage themselves SUCK! from my experieces, there support is slow, rude, dumb (they dont understand the problem or give a stupid answer), well i could go on with that. they need to work on their people skills. |

I have been one who likes to 'ride the cusp' of new technology ... I have come to realize that anytime a company comes to market and realizes a SIGNIFICANT increase in subscribers in a short period of time, the customer has the potential of seeing a decrease in level of service. But all the good companies have recognized this, adjusted to the climate, and been able to rise to the top. I think that when you ditch 'Ma Bell', or her kids who have the multi-decade infrastructure behind them for something new and improved ... especially at a reduced cost ... you are going to have to be patient and wait for the sea to calm. My number transfer is to happen today, so I'm gonna stick with Vonage for as long as possible.
As for 911 service, when I disconnected my wireline account, I could still plug a phone into their network, lift the receiver and dial 911. I would assume there are other phone companies that provide that service as well ... even mobile telcos do.
... My 2 cents.

While Vonage is a new and relatively new service, I'm going to stick with it. Anything that allows me to tell Southern Bell to take a flying leap gets my vote. |

I use it only for outgoing calls and have made a few hundred minutes worth without incident.
Seems most of the issues concern (a) transferring numbers (b) incoming calls and (c) voice mail -- which result in (lengthy) calls to support.
Since I don't use Vonage as my primary telephone service I can't say I've had any problems. The hardest part of setting this whole thing up was taking the twisties off the packaging.....
I also bought one for my parents and theirs went in quickly as well. |

So far, I like my Vonage phone and, considering that I use my Cell phone most of the time anyway, I don't see any reason to drop the service. Hopefully the company will adopt a customer-first attitude and at least make the attempt to appear helpful. This is a difficuly venture for them (IMO) but that doesn't mean they should hide behind a curtain. This ain't the Emerald City.
So...so does anyone know of a service like Vonage, being offered by someone else? Competition in this space is only going to help things and I certainly don't want to go back to Verizon...

I have found Vonage service to be average, the Voip technology is relatively new, bandwidth seems to be the biggist issue. Call in service support has been adaquate, compare this to any other telecomunications service you have dealt with in the past. I find them a bit better, maybe because they are new.
Overall I find them good, anyone who has any amount of long distance calling and has to deal with the local phone company and the long distance services has to admit that Vonage is a step above. Hopefully they can keep ahead of the game and continue to provide a good service.[/list] |

I started this topic because I'm a staunch "bleeding edge" type that absolutes HATES SBC/SNET (my former LEC).
I'm sticking with Vonage for now. I get dead air, dropped calls, robotic voices, no dial tone, can't transfer calls sometimes, 35+minute hold-time to tech support, ad nauseum.
However, I hate SBC so much that this is better than going back to them with their price gouging, never get you bill right, telemarketing, don't care about you attitude that they have consistently displayed without fail.
If there was a alternative to Vonage that worked the way it should and had a clue about customer service - I'd take it.
But there isn't, and that's why we have 2 cell phones as well. |
