I came across this article and the resulting discussion thread over at dslreports.com

Disturbing to say the least. It does make me wonder though... with all the issues posted on this board, how many are Vonage's tech issues and how many are simply the ISP blocking traffic? Is there any way to know for sure?

Vonage must be doing something right in order to attract such special treatment.

This is propagating all over the net. When I first turned on my Voip service with Vonage I got a call from Cox saying they'd be offering the same thing for $18.99 a month real soon now. I then said that it wouldn't surprise me if carriers started blocking the ports to Voip providers other than themselves.

Sure enough it came to fruition, though the problem is more prevalent with independent rural carriers than the big boys.

I wouldbe extremely mad, to say the least. I have cable internet access, so hopefully none of them plan on doing such a heinous act.

Evil or Very Mad

Note he is an Internet co-founder. We all know the other co-founder is Al Gore.

After reading all of the posts on dslreports, I'm a little nervous. For the next three nights, my cable company (mediacom) is going to be down to install a "new provisioning system." I'm already in a fight at the state capital with the big ISPs....especially SBC. Seeing what they get away with makes me wonder about this issue.

Is it just the rural LECs that are doing this? Or are there cable companies too???
