PostPosted: Mon Feb 14, 2005 6:32 pm    Post subject: AOL and DSL and Vonage Reply with quote Back to top

Hello -

I got Vonage about 2 weeks ago. I have been trying to get this up and running but it does not seem to work, no dial tone.

I have AOL with DSL (Verizon - Westell) modem. I cannot go online on internet explorer unless the AOL account is logged in. I also have the modem connected to a Linksys BEFSR81 router and then off one of the LAN ports is the Vonage RT31P2 router. I can get to the internet just fine but cannot get a dial tone all the time. Sometimes I get a dial tone but cannot make calls or receive them and the light on the RT31P2 router is never lit.

I have also tried to connect just the RT31P2 directly to the DSL modem and it still will not work. I have input the AOL user name and password in the router when setting it up as PPPoE and it still did not work.

Has ANYONE out there at all experienced this same problem? Help!!!

Hi! I am afraid I have seen your symptoms quite often with AOL. At present, a discussion on how to hook it up is dubious, but for the record:

http://www.vonage.com/help_knowledgeBase_article.php?article=241

Nevertheless, the RT31P2 will not work on an AOL DSL. Sorry! It is a matter of authentication. The Vonage servers do not recognize your device as an activated Vonage service member. The fault does not lie with Vonage, it lies with AOL.

I would suggest that you find another broadband ISP. If your adapter was sent to you from Vonage, you have 15 days to return it. If you purchased the adapter, individual retailers have their own return policy. What ever you decide, Good Luck!

the first problem is AOL.
Why on earth would you have DSL and pay AOL? That's like buying a VERY LARGE super duty ford truck, just to drive your volkswagon in it's rear and drive the truck around...carrying the car!

Mike,

Thank you for the reference on this matter. I will look into it. Would you have any idea why the senior techs at Vonage would tell me that AOL with DSL will work, though they have yet to get it to work? I know that AOL with Cable will not but they did tell me that it would work with DSL.

What about the PAP2 unit versus the RT31P2? Would that work?

Thanks.

The PAP2 is an older device with just an input jack from your router and a phone jack for your telephone. It will not solve your problem.

The authentication codes are in the router. They are called the MAC address and the Vonage number. The MAC address is a unique 12 digit hexadecimal number that is hardwired into your phone adapter. When your RT31P2 was activated, the MAC number was read into Vonage's list of users. The MAC is like a social security number for internet devices. Each device has its own unique number. Now, with 12 digits you have 2 raised to the power of 48 which is approximately 280 billion combinations of addressing. You can change the MAC address, but it will do you no good if AOL won't send it to Vonage. Your phone number is another unique number that Vonage uses to verify who you are.

There are some ISP's that require MAC addressing registration. This is not the problem here. AOL will not pass on the MAC address of your router to Vonage. Vonage then computes that you are not a member, therefore they will not extend service.

It was first believed that AOL would cooperate with Vonage requirements. A contract was made between Vonage and AOL to pass on the MAC address and phone number to Vonage. AOL is either unable or unwilling to comply with the terms set forth. This is why Technical Support will tell you how to set up your system to work with AOL. The Techs as well as the technical writers were given instructions by AOL on how to hook up. Vonage is fulfilling it's part of the contract, AOL is not.

I am sorry, my friend, but that is the way it is. The problem resides at AOL and not Vonage. If you call AOL they will give you the same instructions, but will never tell you that they refuse to fulfil their side of the contract. AOL will tell you that the problem resides with Vonage. In all probability, AOL will not spend the money to reprogram their servers.

Mike and all,

I just got off the phone with one of the tech support individuals. He came up with one item that NO ONE else had suggested. When you put in your AOL screen name and password into the router, you must put @aol.com after the screen name. IT WORKED!!!!! I now have dial tone and can make and receive phone calls.

Well, that makes sense, since it is logging into AOL when it tries to connect (similar to using their webmail access).

I'd suggest a better idea if you want DSL and AOL: Get DSL from your local phone company/other provider and use BYOA AOL (Bring Your Own Access) which for $14.95/month gives you AOL but you can't use *their* DSL or modems. You use the same AOL client.

For people that have broadband but still want to use AOL content. No restrictions on the DSL, since it's not AOL's.

For those people with AOL DSL, you have to set up the Linksys to work properly with AOL DSL.

Here are the settings:

1. In your browser type in 192.168.15.1 and hit enter. Then type admin for username and admin for password, the hit OK.

2. In Internet setup change:

(Internet Connection Type) to PPPoE
(User Name: type your) screenname@aol.com (All lowercase)
(Password: type your) AOL password (All lowercase)
(Service Name: type) aol dsl (All lowercase)
(Connect on Demand: Max Idle Time) Check
(Time Zone:) Your Time Zone
Then Save and shut down your PC, DSL Modem and Linksys.

3. Reboot your DSL Modum--Linksys--pc in this order. In a couple min's
the phone light should come on and you should be all set.
