PostPosted: Mon Feb 14, 2005 5:22 pm    Post subject: can Ping the RT31P2, but can access through Web? Reply with quote Back to top

Hi,

I got new Linksys RT31P2 and connect with my PC.
I can ping 192.168.15.1 (got reply), but I can't access the router through Web.

Is this defective phone adapter/router?

I tried 3 different PCs with manually set PC's IP; and also DHCP

IP 192.168.15.10
SM 255.255.255.0
DG 192.168.15.1
DNS 192.168.15.1

but, all three PCs can ping the router 192.168.15.1, but can't access through web with IE6, no dialtone.

Any ideas? TIA

There is nothing wrong with your adapter. It is made that way to keep out undesirables. The RT31P2 is in fact a firewall on a hardware level. However, it can be bypassed, so a software companion firewall is still required. Now!

If I understand your question correctly, you wish to ping through the RT31P2 to the internet. Am I correct? If so, you must access the Web-Based Utility by http://192.168.15.1

The Utility comes up at "Setup". Click on "Security" and go to the bottom of the page to "Filter MAC Address". Set the "Block Anonymous Internet Requests" function radio button to "Disable". Click "Save" at the bottom of the page. Unplug the adapter for 5 or 10 seconds and then restore power and wait until the lights stop flashing. That should do it.

Remember, when you're done, set the radio button back to "Enable", click "Save" and reset the adapter. You can find this in the Installation and Troubleshooting Guide page 29. Good luck.

Thank you mbhn5204,

My problem is that I can't access web-based utility from my PC.
I can ping 192.168.15.1 and get reply from RT31P2, but I can't access it.

Thank you.

This can be done easily. Just see the instructions in my response to the original poster in http://www.vonage-forum.com/ftopic2927.html.

Good luck.

Thank you Fletcher,

My problem is I connect RT31P2 directly or through other router, I can't connect it. I can't open http://192.168.15.1 with web browser.

If I Ping 192.168.15.1, then I get reply. However, if I type it http://192.168.15.1 in the address filed of IE6, then 'page can't disply'.

The power LED on the RT31P2 is blinking fast all the time. No Phone LEDs are on.

Maybe I didn't describe my problem well, Sad

Thank you all, anyway.

sounds like it's trying to update or it can't connect to Vonage. when you first plugged the RT31P2 in, did you let it sit for a few minutes or instantly mess with it?

Comdoctor,

Move your ethernet cable to a different router port number and try to access the web page again.

Thanks reebok,

First time I opened the box of RT31P2, I plugged with one pc to network port without WAN connection and wait more than 5 minutes. I checked my PC and it doesn't get any IP from RT31P2, so I changed my PCs IP manually to 192.168.15.20 and ping the 192.168.15.1 and got reply.

Then, I opend IE6 and tried to access 192.168.15.1 but no access at all.

I tried two other PCs, all same. So, I tried to follow manual step by step.

Shutdown all devices, PC, RT31P2 and Cable Modem.
Connected Cable modem to WAN port of RT31P2, Connect PC to LAN port of RT31P2 then, turned on Cable modem.
After a few minute, turn on RT31P2. After a few minutes turned on my PC.

My PC didn't get any IP from RT31P2. So, I decided to use the setup CD.

I connected my PC to the cable modem directly and got IP from optimum online and internet works fine. Setup CD detected my internet connection. Then, I connected the cable modem to RT31P2 WAN port. I connected my PC to RT31P2's LAN port. Turned on RT31P2. Wait a few minutes. I turned on my PC. Still didn't get any IP from RT31P2.

If I changed my PC's IP manually to 192.168.15.xx, then I got reply when I ping 192.168.15.1. That means RT31P2 is not totally dead.

However, if I open web browser to connect 192.168.15.1, no luck.

So far, I played more than 10 routers and a few managed switches but no problem to access with IE6. I think RT31P2 is almost same as other linksys wired/wireless routers, right?

Did I missed something?

Thank you so much.

looks like you did it all. I wonder if vonagebest suspects a bad port? strange.

I am a network novice..so pardon me if this sounds dumb/stupid..but is it possible that the router (RT31P2) is refurbished (even thought u did mention it is new) and the someone (previous owner??) had changed the default port (80,8080 or whatever the default is) on which the admin Server runs? That might explain the router being pingable but no response for http. If that is the case, i dont know how to get that port or reset it to factory defaults.
