Evil or Very Mad Here's my story of why Vonage Problems:
After relying solely on my cellular phone for a year because i was annoyed by the high costs of traditional land line service (a $49.99 unlimited package meant $80 after taxes), I came across a Vonage ad. I had been meaning to sign up for Voip phone service with Earthlink, but in features, Vonage beat out the Earthlink and came in at a lower price at $25.99. Wonderful I thought as I waited anxiously for my Cisco ATA 186 (converts analog voice signal to digital; your phone plugs into this device and this device to your router) to arrive in the mail.

Well, let me quit beating around the bush and say that this service **** at best. Here's why:
Got my voicemail working and it was fine. Had some friends call in from work to show them how great Vonage was. Voicemail message had mysteriously disappeared and was replaced by an annoying beep, beep, beep. . . and you couldn't leave a message. Called in and finally got through to someone after several attempts and they said that they had an outage. Ok, so I reset my message.
Set up a virtual number for my parents to use to call me. Did not work. I called Vonage and of course couldn't get through on the line (busy signals, dropped calls, and answering machine after being on hold). I sent an email to support several days ago. To this day I have received nothing and of course I can't get though to anyone on the phone.
Since Saturday, today is Monday - phone service is off and on due to outages. Saturday it was for several hours. Sunday a few minutes. Monday a couple hours. Not able to make or receive calls. Not acceptable
Customer service is not accessible. When stuff goes wrong, and belive me it does, you just have to sit back and wait and use your cell phone. No wonder they let you transfer your calls to another number for free. Your number never works!
I have yet to be a satisfied customer. I had four friends ready to switch Vonage and I told them to stay with Verizon. Verizon may kill you on taxes, but hey, at least you get to use your phone and you can rely on it!

No, it's not my setup - I have Earthlink cable modem - 2.3mbs down and 384k up. I know how to build and manage networks so it's not my configuration. Vonage is a bit ahead of their time. Like Microsoft, they should have worked out their bugs before releasing such a poor service to customers.

My take on this whole service is that it is a lot better as an outgoing-only than as a replacement for POTS. Judging from other feedback I think you are right that the service needs better support and needs to be more reliable for incoming calls.

I agree with everything you said. As an "early adopter" I don't mind putting up with some glitches and not getting exactly what I'm paying for, but the last 2 weeks have been especially horrible for Vonage technology and support. The biggest thing that irks me is they are spending money on TV ads pretending like they are an alternative to a 100+ year old utility. This money would be better spent solidifying their infrastructure. Mom and Pop can come on board when things are more stable.

I'm based in the UK and called somebody with a 917 area code (but also based in the UK) and it sounded fine. However, I agree that they are silly to pretend that it's an alternative to POTS in the US as it clearly isn't reliable enough. I think there's great potential for it as a value added product, (especially when marketed outside the US) as it leaves other services like Net2Phone and Callserve for dead, but not as a POTS replacement.

i will admit they are lacking in many area's right now. and probably gonna get worse before it gets better. but im not sure it's something to cry about or even slander them for. they bit off a big bite. they are chocking right now. i say wait and see how they recover. like with any internet bases company you take a risk when dealing with them. even though hard i'd try to contact them let them know how dissapointed you are see if they will give you some kind of credit for cancellation fee or something..

I have had exactly the same problems as the previous customer. I have a dedicated T1 with 100% reliability so I know the problem is with Vonage. Voice Mail Message disappears for no reason replaced with a few clicks. They don't respond to email and nobody answers the phone. They should stop advertizng and get their act together. I own an ISP and was recommending this service to my customers. I am now telling everyone to forget it. This service just isn't ready for prime time. Cry

Well, dispite the outage on thursday that lasted for a few hours, everything here in the upstate NY area is good. For the price it cannot be beat, I have had 0 problems with missed/dropped/bad quality calls ( except the overall outage on thursday ). While I admit there are still growing pains, it seems a whole lot better than the alternatives.

Remember that just because you have good bandwidth does not mean that you have good bandwidth to Vonage, you should double check that the overall connection to their proxy is working as you would expect. Have you first attempted to turn on bandwidth saving features to minimize any impact that might have? Connected the ATA-186 directly to the internet so that there are no firewall issues that might be causing problems?

I have had much trouble getting e-mail support to turn around in a reasonable time frame, but calls to the Vonage help line appear to be handled quickly and professionally.

Is it possible that there is a problem that is isolated to a specific areacode?

Rolling Eyes First off... I've had problems with the voicemail, but an email to customer service explained that it was a known problem and they're working on it. I don't expect an estimate... Sometimes you don't know... This is technology, prone to mechanical and user foulups. In any case, voicemail greetings, bother generic and extended absense are working fine for me now... I couldn't be happier with Vonage, as I use it as a mostly outgoing provider. Anyone who has experience with broadband at all should know that this isn't a 100% guaranteed thing. Glitches happen. And, really, if you don't like the service, you can cancel, right? I only wish that my ATA was unlocked so I could use the second port on FWD, but I agreed to the TOS about that. SO, all in all, I'm getting what I paid for and what was advertised, minus an occasional glitch, which is normal in the world of the Internet.

Sad

I really wanted to like Vonage. I built a new house last spring and as I was wiring the "smart" accessories such as video and my home network, I took pains to make sure that my telephones were wired in to my central closet and even planned space for the ATA unit in my "smart" closet. In fact, I never even had telephone copper brought in to the house. I wonder if my house was the first one in the country custom wired for Vonage?

Unfortunately, Vonage is not ready for prime time. I have had numerous small problems (yes, I have proper bandwidth and yes, I know how to configure my network). Every week it is something: lack of dial-tone, dropped calls, lost voicemail, etc.

Last week, was just the worst. On Monday, we were notified of the price increase. On Thursday, the entire (602) 445-xxxx exchange simply rang fast-busy. On Friday, I dialed in for voicemail and received 46 urgent messages from another user’s mailbox. Yes, I got someone else’s voicemail! Does this mean that someone else is getting my messages? I'm looking for a job right now and can't afford to miss one call!

In Phoenix, we can get local phone service through Qwest, Cox, or MCI. I hate the thought of giving these huge companies more $$$, but Vonage just doesn't provide the reliability that the average consumer expects from POTS. I really wish that Vonage actually worked. I love the idea of the technology behind Vonage. There is bleeding edge, and then there is all out hemorrhaging.

So, Qwest will be out tomorrow to bring their lines in to my house. As soon as I'm up and running with them, it is goodbye to Vonage.

<Sigh>
