PostPosted: Mon Feb 14, 2005 1:33 pm    Post subject: 1 second delay on Vonage using Adsl, please help!!!! Reply with quote Back to top

I am a new Vonage user, and I have noticed a 1 second delay when talking to people, which makes the conversation kind of odd.
I am using Adsl 256K download, 128K upload.
I called Vonage Tech Support, and he said a delay isn't common, and he tried doing different settings, such as sending 100 packets, changing the codec, etc, all to no avail. He said that when he pinged me he was reaching me at 2 milliseconds, so the 1 second delay is happening somewhere after it reaches my modem.
Any ideas as to what I could do to stop the 1 second delay?
Is any delay at all common? Or should it be in real time like a traditional phone?

Are you possibly using a firewall between your ADSL modem and your Vonage ATA adapter? If so, you should set it up so that the ATA's IP is in the DMZ. This is also sometimes the cause of echoing.

Let us know if this is the case, if not, then we can try something else or will need more info about your setup.

no firewall in between the Vonage router and the modem, how it is set-up is phone line to modem, and modem to Vonage router using a network cable, and then the router to the computer using a network cable.

According to the product page at http://www.linksys.com/products/product.asp?prid=652&scid=29 it does support QoS.

On page 35 of the user guide (found at ftp://ftp.linksys.com/pdf/rt31p2_ug.pdf) it has directions for setting up QoS. Page 37 mentions Voice QoS briefly.

I don't have this specific router, so can only offer my guesses.

1) Disable QoS and go to testyourvoip.com to see what rates you get.
2) Enable QoS set application priorities on ports 5060 & 5061 to high.
3) If you are using a P2P (peer to peer) sharing program, find out what application ports it uses and set those to low priority.
4) If able, set other listed applications to medium priority (HTTP, FTP, POP3, etc), so you can surf while the P2P sharing is going on.
5) If you still have trouble with the above, set the QoS Upstream Rate manually to a bandwidth that is about 100K lower that what you got in step 1 above.

You can also experiment with different settings in the Vonage (online)Dashboard for the Bandwidth Saver, sometimes lowering your speed actually improves voice quality.

Thank you for the tips, I have tried all this already though. I have actually turned off my computer so that all available bandwidth is to Vonage, and I still have the delay, also have tried all bandwidth settings in the Vonage dashboard.
Is it possible that no matter what setting you try, and you still have a delay that it could be the Adsl download speed from the ISP, and if so, could someone explain what this means?
Is it common to have a delay when using Vonage with Adsl?

When I did the testyourvoip.com my rating was 4.1, which is really good, so I don't understand why I get a delay. Any other ideas?

Sounds like a bit of poor connectivity. After all, it is Valentine's Day. Millions of people are sending E-cards, ordering flowers, etc. This stuff happens. Have you considered running a few tests on your system as well as the speed of you ISP? No? Let me recommend that you punch up:
http://www.dslreports.com
run a Speed Test as well as the Tweak Test. That should give you a good idea where you stand with your ISP.

I don't quite understand why, but the minute that something goes wrong with the service everyone runs to Technical Support. To assume that Vonage is the problem behind every error is a fallacy. This is what Tech Support is going to tell you:

Save yourself the time and trouble. Do some testing and troubleshooting on your own. I have given you two sources of information directly related to the operation of your internet, ISP, and computer system. There are many others if you would care to look.

Because it's advertised as an alternative to traditional phone service. Not everyone is proficient with computers and testing. They buy a product from Vonage, follow the instructions, and expect it to work. When it doesn't work, they expect to be able to call Vonage, have someone answer, and correct the problem or help them correct it on their own. Just like most other services you buy.

It doesn't matter who's fault it is.

I assigned no fault to anybody. I simply made the suggestion that you can do quite a lot yourself. I, personally, prefer my own conclusions over the conclusions of others. You misunderstand me, I simply made a suggestion.
