PostPosted: Sun Feb 13, 2005 11:56 pm    Post subject: Vonage blocking iChat connections? Reply with quote Back to top

I've been recently unable to connect to folks using Apple iChat for video conferencing. In looking at the iChat connection doctor, it says that it's sending the SIP invite to port 5060, but it's sending that invite to the Vonage device rather than my iSight-equiped iMac computer.

Anyone have a work around that will allow for the use of both iChat AV and Vonage?

BTW: I'm running a Linksys WRT54G v2 in front of the Vonage device.

You need to forward port 5060 to your machine, if you haven't already set it to do so.

I did set port forwarding to my machine and what is interesting is that it sometimes will connect and other times won't -- when it won't the connection doctor says that it's forwarding 5060 to the Vonage device (which isn't even connected anymore!) and is not on the DHCP list of active clients.

Still, from reading other posts, forwarding 5060 away from the Vonage device will keep Vonage from working, no?

It is worth noting that this also means that one cannot use iChat video/audio and Vonage Softphone at the same time. In my experience, even if one is not on a Vonage call, the Softphone application must be totally closed or iChat will refuse to open a video/audio stream.

No, IChat will work fine provided that you don't step on its ports. I configure all my Voip lines to use ports above 5060..

If you have a Vonage softphone, then you need to get the X-Lite or X-Pro or eyeBeam and configure it according to instructions that have been posted to the Vonage softphone fora.

[quote="jcmallery"]No, IChat will work fine provided that you don't step on its ports. I configure all my Voip lines to use ports above 5060..

Ok...I am a total "port forwarding rookie" and need some serious help. Can someone please help me with my situation?

My setup is: cable modem - Vonage (linksys) - airport (not extreme).

The situation is that since I got Vonage (about 4 months ago) I have not been able to use iChat. I have the ports set correctly on my Mac tower, but have absolutely no idea how to set the ports on the linksys. Can someone priovide very basic step by step instructions? I have sen the link provided by Vonage telling me which ports need to be opened, but how do I get to that point?

By the way - I am no techie...so any instructions need to be basic!!!!!

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

describe your network, any routers or other devices you might have.

If I were you I wouldn't do anything on ports 5060 of 5061 because your Vonage likely uses those ports. set the ports on the iChat software client to something else (if you can) and forward those ports to your Mac. If not you are going to have to have your Vonage use a different port range, like 10000 which can only be accomplished by a super CS tech like me.

either way we need more info on how your network is set up, device types, etc...

Question
I've been driving myself nuts with ports as well, Vonage has killed my ichat.

From the apple Docs:

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93208

One of the ports Apple wants you to open is port 5060 in your firewall.

I also see that Vonage wants port 5060 - open

It can't go both places!!

Based on that link posted about port forwarding, it appears that 5061 UDP needs to be open for outgoing only. And even then, only for older devices. Again, according to the article on port forwarding, 10000-20000 UDP are the only ports that require both inbound and outbound access. YMMV.
