Hello,

I have been searching for about a week now for a good Voip company. The fact that only 2-3 of them have the available feature of adding the 800#, decision making wasn't that difficult.

I would like to clarify a few things before I sign up and, any help weather from Vonage staff or you kind members, would be greatly appreciated:

Please correct me if I am wrong but as I understand the phone adapter needs to be returned in case the service has been canceled before the 1 year has elapsed? Is it possible to pay up-front for this adapter and not have to worry about this at all? After all, if Vonage doesn't satisfy I would like to try a few other providers, and having to mail these adapters back and forth just seems pointless.

I travel back and forth to Europe. As matter of fact I spend quite a bit of time there - between 4 to 6 months a year. The fact that I will be reachable on the US based phone number while I am overseas is just awesome! So, my only concern is quality of those calls!? I read allot of people complaining on this forum. Then again I am sure there a good number of them which simply don't have any issues and they are not coming over here to write how wonderful the service is. What I don't understand is what are all the factors that will have the influence on the quality of the calls? I understand that internet connection is obviously the most important one. I think that should be taken care of from my end since I have a 1Mbit connection on both ends. What are other factors?

Thank you all in advance!

Phew! That's a lot questions, but I understand. First, about the adapter:
http://www.vonage.com/features.php?feature=phone_adapter
There, that saves a lot of writing.

You may purchase the adapter and the service at Best Buy, OfficeMax, CompUsa, etc. A reasonable Broadband connection is required. 1Mbps will work, but just barely.

I acquired a Linksys RT31P2 from Vonage. It came by UPS in one week. I hooked it up in less than 10 minutes and it has been running flawlessly ever since. As a rule, there are no contracts with Vonage. If I cancel service, I must surrender the adapter immediately, not 1 year, or purchase it outright for $40.
http://www.linksys.com/products/product.asp?grid=34&prid=652

At present, Vonage does not sell adapters. However, I was told by a Service Rep. that it will become possible sometime in the future.

Oh! One more thing. You asked about trying it out. If you purchase the adapter from, say, Best Buy, it's yours whether you cancel the service or not. If you sign up through Vonage, you have a 15 day trial period.

It is in my experience that those who follow the directions will find that the system works better than they had hoped. As to some others, who insist upon placing their adapter into a configuration that is unnatural, find that they have strange and difficult problems to solve.

mbhn5204 Thanks for all the info!

Are you being sarcastic about the 1Mbit or are you for real? If you are for real, please let me know what connection do you have? I have read somewhere on the Vonage web site that there is only about 90kbps upload required

There's no way that you need 1MBps upload. I have 3MBps download, and 150-200kbps upload, and thw quality is perfect. I think the point of the last post was that if you have 1MBps download, you should have enough upload bandwidth as well.

I don't... it's 1MBps download and 512Kbps upload. I was pretty sure I have read that only 90Kbps are required, so I was very suprised when someone stated it's just "barely" enough.

Sounds like it will work just fine. Good luck with it!

You have plenty of bandwith. I have 1mbit/128K, and it works great.

YOu can buy the adapter. I picked one up today from radioshack for $60. If you buy the adapter you dont pay the $30 activation fee, or the $10 Shipping fee, plus you get a $50 MIR!

Good luck getting the mail in rebate. You have to wait over 90 days to even submit it and by then, most people by what i have read never got the rebate. My 2 cents.

No, I wasn't being sarcastic. I'm sorry if you thought I was. However, I have seen Vonage work with upstreams even lower than that. I am working with someone right now that has speeds that you would think could never work.

Myself, I run Comcast cable at 3Mbps downstream and 256kbps upstream. Although many have already received the upgrade, I am still waiting for the promised 4Mbps downstream and 384Kbps upstream modification. It's a costly service, but I don't wait for a download.
