PostPosted: Sun Feb 13, 2005 3:06 pm    Post subject: Vonage Drops Calls Reply with quote Back to top

For the last week or so I have been having problems with Vonage dropping all my calls. I will be talking to someone and then they can't hear me anymore and hang up frustrated or the phone call goes completely dead and neither one of us can hear each other. Because this has been happening for over a week they know to call me on my local phone number that I have had the piece of mind not to drop yet. My friends are asking when I am going to discontinue my service with Vonage and get my long distance put back on my local phone number.

I have had other problems with Vonage where people that are talking to me hear beeping sounds. Plus I would try to place calls and the phone would ring once and then a fast busy. If I tried with my local phone the call would go through. I attempted to call Customer Service and was on hold for over an hour and a half (I was determined that I was going to talk to someone) finally got a human being and they didn't know why it was happening and they would have someone return my call. I told them how long I had been on hold and they said they would have someone call me back right away (that was at 2:30pm). Well I went out that night and of course they called at 9:42pm so I missed them. They said someone would call me tomorrow, which no one did. I was not in the mood to sit on hold for a long period of time another day so just gave up.

Like I said my friends say I should just cancel. I will give Vonage another week to resolve this dropping the phone calls issue and then I intend on canceling. I had 4 of my friends lined up to try Vonage, but with this latest issue happening they have changed their minds until Vonage gets their act together.

If someone could help resolve this situation I would be very appreciative.

We didn't have a problem until today, calls kept dropping like flies. You can hear the person on the other end and they can't hear you.

Are either of you on Comcast by chance? Did you get the recent speed upgrade from Comcast?

I had similar problems. BUt after looking through this forum, I found that my modem was the problem. I was running an old toshiba modem. I updated my hardware with a Moto 5100 and things have been seemless. Today I had one problem calling out where the other party couldnt hear me, but Im pointing that problem to my wireless phone interfearing with my wireless router in the same room I was talking in.
Hope this helps

SuperDave,
What state/area do you live in? Comcast is rolling out Bedrock (registration system) in many areas. They may be doing work (or all ready did work) in your area. Have you recently tried recycling power to you CM?

I used Vonage for about a month without any trouble regarding the actual phone calls (much trouble with my replay, though) and starting on Friday Feb 11, I could neither create a call nor receive a call reliably. My connections haven't changed nor have they come loose and I've checked my Bandwidth and packet loss with the online Voip tools (testyourvoip.com) and don't see any problem.

Trying to characterize when the problem occurs has been difficult, but I do think there may be an association with when I'm actually *using* the internet, for example, downloading and uploading files, to when I have a higher incidence of dropped calls.

I also have a major problem with having been given a ROUTER (with phone adapter), rather than a simple phone adapter. I have another router in my system, and the two routers apparently fight, judging by logs. I wish I could have gotten what was advertised -- a simple phone adapter with NO ROUTER!

Also, I'm on comcast, the other router is a motorola wireless SBG900 cable modem gateway (latest and greatest technology, so that's not the issue here....).

I cannot recommend Vonage, no way. The service doesn't seem to work, they guarantee that they will get billions of customer support calls by giving out a complicated router (thus making it almost certain that anyone who is trying to use wireless and therefore has their own router already is going to have problems with the 2 routers interfering), and then they cannot answer the help line nor give any help when they do answer. It's pretty bad right now -- definitely not ready for prime time.

My advice is go back to the land line.

I live in Maple Shade, NJ. 10 minutes out of Philly. I restarted my CM when I got the email from CC 2 weeks ago about the speed increase. Haven't done it since, and didn't have any trouble until yesterday. The other 2 weeks I have been on the phone for 20-45 minutes at a clip without any problems. Just found the timing strangely familiar with the OP.

Annsera,

Please post your setup with model numbers showing the order in which they are plugged in...

example:

Motorola SB4100 modem -> Linksys EZXS88W 8 port switch -> Linksys BEFSX41 4 port VPN firewall router (1.53.0 firmware with QoS) -> Cisco ATA186 Vonage adapter (port 4) & Linksys BEFSR81 8 port QoS router (2.45.10 firmware) (port 1) -> computer network

It may sound like a hassle, but trying to troubleshoot your problem without full information can be hit or miss.

If I had to take a shot, I would say that you need some sort of QoS (Quality of Service) setup to keep your computer Internet use from stomping all over your Vonage voice calls. If you give us your setup, I'm sure someone can detail what needs to be done.
