My number was switched exactly 20 business days as promised (Verizon, Northern Virgina). Requested April 27, switched May 26th.

I have a phone system in my house (up to 4 lines in, 16 extensions), so it was easy to have both the old Verizon line and the Vonage lines running in tandem on two of the input ports. I programmed it to call out on the Vonage line while still receiving incoming lines from the old Verizon line.

On the day of the switch, both lines were active. I called Verizon about this (unnecessary) and they told me the Verizon line would remain active until midnight on the day of the switchover.

Vonage sent reminder e-mails on both the day before and the day of the switch. They advised I might have to re-set my voicemail and unplug my box to "reboot" it. Both tasks were unnecessary, as it turns out.

The switch was completely painless and automatic. The only thing I had to do was reprogram my phone system to show the Verizon line as being deactivated.

To the poster who got his northern Virginia phone number switched to Vonage in 20 business days - Congratulations!

I'm not sure what genie is sitting on your shoulder, but go play the lottery today.

I, too, put in a request for transfer (which was processed on March 14). I'm still waiting for an update (almonst three months later) despite numerous requests to Vonage.

I suspect your experience is the exception rather than the rule, but I'm glad it worked out for you.

Before you blame Vonage or Verizon, make sure your ducks are all in a row.

You have submitted the signed form by fax, along with your phone bill, correct?

You have not made any changes to your Verizon service in the last 30 days, such as adding call waiting or some other service, correct?

The name on your new account is the same as on your Verizon account, correct? (This almost tripped me up).

Any or all of those things can delay the process.

What is the status as indicated on the Vonage site? Has the request been sent to the Carrier?

Verizon website doesn't indiacte anything yet. I called Vonage a couple weeks ago and they were going to 'escalate' my transfer. I will probably call them again soon, not in any big hurry, just want to get it done.

If Vonage has sent the request to the carrier, then how is the problem Vonage's?

As I understand it, transferring the number requires the cooperation of three parties, and if one does not cooperate, the process can be delayed.

I think the ball is in Verizon's court, and yes, I know, when you call them, they say they can't do anything about it (I am not sure this is entirely true).

The majority of Vonage users do not visit this forum, as they have little to complain about. So I do not think your experience is "typical".

And like I said, if it doesn't work out for you, go back to telco. Vonage is not for everybody. It is not a utility like the telcos.

And some numbers apparently just can't be transferred period. See VonageGal's post on this.

You know, in the olden days (I am dating myself here) when you moved, your phone number changed. We never thought of it as all that big a hassle.

If Verizon did not port my number, I would gladly change my phone number to the new Vonage one. Since I am moving, I would have had no choice, anyway.

Hope it works out for you!

First of all, I never stated I had a problem with Vonage.
Secondly, I am not complaining.
Thirdly, this thread was started as a report on timeframes to have your number ported.

They are the people billing me...If they expect to get paid, it IS their problem.

Verizon RI - and this is with a litltle kick in the pants to Verizon because I have friends at the PUC and at Verizon itself.

November 5, 2004 Awaiting Letter of Authorization
November 8, 2004 Letter of Authorization (LOA) Received
November 8, 2004 Transfer Sent to Carrier
December 13, 2004 Carrier Approved Transfer
December 13, 2004 Completed LNP Transfer

Note the nearly one month lag between time sent to carrier and their approval time.

Current status after a ton of emails:

Current Status: Transfer in Process Transfer Date: N/A

Based on the fact that I have had several problems (including the non-local temp number I was given) with Vonage since signing up, all of which were Vonage's fault, I don't buy the blame falling on Verizon or anywhere but Vonage without proof. Back in one of my early calls, I was told to insist on a port date when I got a reply from the porting department. I insisted and was told that it would be 5 days before I got the date. Two weeks later, still no date, just a "thanks for your patience". (No indication of a change shown on Verizon's website, either.) I jumped and filled out the Letter of Authorization within an hour of signing up, but have never had a response that quick from Vonage. In fact, I am still waiting for the call tag to return the router I didn't want to begin with - and that was almost two months ago!

I guess it is like the lottery - some get great service (like the person who recommended Vonage to me), but others get virtually no service. Personally, I would like more specifics and less "thanks for your patience" when I ask why something is not done. I know if I did that to my company's customers, I would be out of business really quickly - a good reputation is hard to build, and has to be maintained at all costs!
