Great idea to forward your number...how did that work, and why didn't anyone else thing of that?
Second part first: There was some speculation that having an active Call Forwarding setup would somehow interfere with porting, in the way that Distincive Ring does. I figured it would be worth it to try, and it worked fine.
As soon as I got
Vonage
I changed my Verizon service to delete Caller ID and add Call Forwarding.
With Call Forwarding service you set it up by dialing *72 and then the number you want the calls to transfer to. Since my new
Vonage
number was a local call from my home phone the only fee for this was the monthly fee for the call forwarding service.
This way I could use my main phone with
Vonage
and not have to give out my temporary
Vonage
number while I evaluated the service.
The directions said that the forwarding phone was supposed to ring briefly every time a call was forwarded through it but mine never did - only the
Vonage
phone ever rang when someone called our house.
Even though I no longer had Caller ID on my Verizon line, the transferred calls came through with the Caller ID info of the original caller displayed.
Once I started the porting process, my outgoing Caller ID number on my
Vonage
phone changed to the (Verizon) number that I was porting in, even before the port was completed (two thumbs up).

April 26, 2006 Awaiting Letter of Authorization
April 26, 2006 Letter of Authorization (LOA) Received
April 26, 2006 Transfer Sent to Carrier

Verizon -- North of Boston
I got an email today indicating the transfer would be done tomorrow! Six (6) days!!!
I also just got the phone adapter in today. I best get my butt home, install it and hope it works or I'm toast! I read -- after the fact -- how the smart thing to do is get
Vonage
, hook it up, make sure it works, then port my number. But before I read that I read how so many people were having to wait months to get their number ported so I figured I'd just start the whole thing at once and probably get a month to do it anyway.
Looks like I'm on the hot seat. Boy, this could really put me in the dog house with my wife and teen aged kids!!!
Wish me luck!

I raced home -- no speeding ticket thankfully -- unpacked the Motorola VT2442, plugged the LAN line into an open port on my router, plugged in the power to the VT2442 adapter and watched the lights...
...a few minutes later (2 or 3) the Phone 1 light came on steady. I plugged a phone into phone port 1....dialtone! It worked. Now let's see if the porting of my number happens as scheduled tomorrow.

April 26, 2006 Transfer Sent to Carrier

Now if I can just get the VT2442 volume to chill out...

Post subject: My Day Will Come....someday
My life as I knew it ended on 01-31-06, this is the day I signed up for
Vonage
. As of today 05-03-06 I am still waiting for my number to be transfered from Verizon. I now have trembling hands, my dialing finger is wore to the nub, my dreams now consist of "I am sorry, please expect an email in 48 hours", the rolling of my eyes has caused them to stick in a skyward position, my eyebrows now permanently meet in the middle
, my hair...well it was pretty before I pulled it all out, and my right arm is almost attached to my ear from waiting on hold.
Today was a big day for me, I filed a complaint with the FCC, I left a voice message for the CEO of
Vonage
Jeffrey Citron (1-732-528-2600 select #2 option and then enter CITRON) and I also follwed it up with an email
jeffrey.citron@vonage.com
Don't know if this will make a difference, but hey it was more productive than the two hours I spent on the phone today with Verizon and
Vonage
. I am very impressed with the 1 month credit
Vonage
is allowing me on the 3 months of double phone bills....awful big of them considering this mess is all my fault (according to them).
I am now going to bed so I can get a little rest before this night
mare starts again tomorrow.
UPDATE!!
I received a call from
Vonage
at 8:30 this morning.....guess the voice message and email helped. I have now been assigned one person to work on my account. He said I would be updated as new information is available. I guess I will give this 1 week and see where I am at. Wish meluck...I need it.
