All,

I just turned my Vonage service on! Setup was a snap and the quality is great. There is a slight buzz (very minimal, but noticable) on the line when nobody is speaking. Any ideas what might cause it? Phone too close to wireless router, maybe? I have the phone cord running right behind my monitor, I am going to try moving it as the CRT could be causing some interference.

I have the RT31P2 between my Panasonic 2.4 GHz cordless phone and my Linksys WRT54G router. Seemed like a good idea to have the new stuff behind the router/firewall.

What are some tweaks for this type of setup for the best quality, security, etc?

Any input would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks Vonage. You have a great product with a great price.

Reebok,

Thanks for the reply. I will try it. I don't have any RJ11 connectors at the moment.

By the way, can you share what the best QOS settings would be? Should I have them set up on the RT31P2, as well as the WRT54G?

Also, are you aware of any security best practices?

Thanks,

Taugdog

you can plug an old phone in and leave it off the hook. accomplishes the same thing (and was actually the original solution).
rebus has posted before that his tests indicate you should put the amount of bandwidth you have in the qos box (unless you want to leave it on auto).
you sort of said but I don't understand how your network is set up. basically, if the linksys rt31p2 (vonage) router is closest to your broadband modem, set it up there. if your WRT54G is closest to it (and therefore the RT31P2 is behind it), then set it up on the WRT54G. the unit closest to the modem is the one that will be controlling the bandwidth. many people use and love the WRT54G and have great success with it in front (closest to modem).
I don't know of any blatant, holy cow they're going to steal everything security holes. I'm really not into security stuff at all. I just don't care about it, but that's not really the best approach, and there are many on this forum who are concered about it and could answer that better. basically, as long as you have wep set up on the wless, there's not a whole lot else to do.

Actually, WEP is breakable by experts. It does protect against the average neighbor stealing your bandwidth, but it will not protect your system from experts.

Some added security can be gained by only allowing specific MAC adresses to use your wireless. Even that is not foolproof, as MAC addresses can be spoofed, but the spoofer would have to know the MAC addresses you have authorized -- which is not very likely to happen.

Most network engineers will tell you that anything on a network is inherently insecure and that goes double when you have wireless on it. We just have to balance the tradeoffs between the services we want and the level of security we need. For most folks, WEP + MAC address lists is plenty of security.

I have SSID broadcast disabled, wireless MAC filtering, limited # of DHCP users, 128 bit Encryption and non-default admin password and SSID on WRT54G. My network is secure. If one was to get in, then they deserve it! Confused

Another question: Since my RT31P2 is behind the WRT54G and on the 192.168.15.X subnet, I am unable to get to the Web admin on the RT31P2 unless I connect one of my PCs directly to it, since my WRT54G DHCP PCs are on the 192.168.1.x subnet. What is a good solution to be able to reach the RT31P2 and WRT54G admin web pages without changing cables?

Thanks dudes. Very Happy

OK, but do you have your wireless access point encased in a lead-lined concrete vault buried at least a 1000 feet beneath the arctic? Lol Other than that, you've done everything I could think of.

Yes, you can remotely administer your RT31P2 behind your WRT54G without plugging a computer directly into the adapter. See the instructions in my post on Feb 8 at http://www.vonage-forum.com/ftopic2927.html .

Good luck.

I have the latest Linksys WRT54G firmware version, which is 3.03.6. This version was supposed to address Voip issues.

The firmware on my RT31P2 is 1.27.0.1.

Is there a more recent firmware version for the RT31P2?

That is the most recent firmware release -- in fact, it was only issued on February 8 if I recall correctly.

Looks like you're up to date.

If you're worried about security, you could change the 8080 port to some number that is not so obvious -- but that would only add protection from within your LAN, since 192.168.1.x is only accessible from behind your router.
