PostPosted: Thu Feb 10, 2005 11:12 am    Post subject: Cost for maintaining dialtone for DSL service (with Vonage) Reply with quote Back to top

All,

I recently got Vonage Voip service, and so far so good, everything is working well, and and happy with Vonage...so far.

My problem is, I have DSL for my broadband service, and in order for DSL to work, I need to maintain my dialtone. I called up Verizon about a month ago, and they told me just to maintain dialtone, the cost would be $5.95 a month for the Federal users fee, plus approx $3.00 for state and federal taxes. Not great, but something I can live with.

I called up Verizon yesterday, and they told me IT WOULD COST $18 A MONTH just to maintain my dialtone, and the first individual I spoke to was wrong. that is $18 A MONTH!!!!!!!!!! That fee, plus Vonage will end up costing me MORE then what I was paying for phone service before switching to Vonage. To reiterate, I'll end up loosing money by switching to Vonage.

Does anyone know how to get around this? Is there some way to reduce the cost of just maintaining dialtone? For those of you who have DSL and Vonage, how much do you pay a month just for the dialtone?

I really would like a solution to this, because I'm locked into a year long contract for my DSL service, so I can't switch to cable at this time. I'm very aggravated at this point.

Peace,
Cosmo

naked dsl as it is sometimes called, or dsl without dialtone is coming around in some parts of the country faster than others. if it's not in your area yet, there's not much you can do about it. where do you live? see if you can call back and get someone to tell you that again and sign up on the spot. get their name obviously too.

edit: actually it looks like it's coming around with other providers (i.e. qwest) but not verizon. I found this post from yesterday:
http://www.dslreports.com/forum/remark,12589377~mode=flat
"Naked DSL from Verizon is apparently still in the 'we're considering it, maybe' stage. Every once in a while, mention of it will pop up in a news report, but no serious announcements have been made yet."

Reebok,

I live in the Washington DC metropolitan area, so as general statement, most new technologies do get rolled out here quicker then in other parts of the country. I currently have Earthlink DSL, and like I said, I signed up for 1 year of service, so I can't back out of it without penalties and fees. Of course I decided on DSL BECAUSE my cost calculation factored in $8 for dialtone, not $18, which, as I stated in my first post, blows the entire financial aspect of this out of the water.

I don't know if Earthlink provides "dry" DSL, but I'll ask, since I believe that they use Covad as the real DSL provider.

Thanks for your help, and please keep the suggestions coming.

oh ok, I went off and assumed you had verizon dsl. at any rate, earthlink doesn't provide dry dsl either from what I'm seeing. covad might, but I since you're technically through elink, I don't think it matters.
