I'd like to withhold caller id permanently, anyone discovered a setting that does this? It's a pain dialing *67 on every call... |

unfortunately you are not allowed to do that in the UK. this is because the emergency services operator 999 requires caller id. therefore you can only withhold caller id each time you make the call |

Hi James,
It is possible to have a permanent withhold with most telcos, Vonage just haven't implemented it yet. They plan to in the second quarter of 2005.
If you have a permanent withhold, or even if you just do a one call withhold, it isn't withheld from the telco, you are after all a part of their network. So when if you call 999 the operater still will have your number and they will then be able to pass this on to the emergency service you ask for.

Emergency services and the telephone company themselves are able to see your information, regardless of whether or not you use the withhold feature or not. In fact, here in Canada we have a code *57 which allows us to trace a call. If the last person who called your line withheld their number, you can pick up the phone, dial *57 and it logs the last name and number of the caller to your phone. The police can then access this information, and it can be used as evidence in a court of law.
You cannot hide from the authorities. |

Shouldn't it be 141 instead of *67? Vonage UK advertise Call Return as 1471, so they should be clued up on our numbering plan. If subscribers want to block their number permanently, then they should be able to dial 1470 to unblock it when calling people with Anonymous Caller Rejection (like me). |

You can also use *67 if you like. That is the North American code, but it likely works on Vonage phones worldwide since the UK 1471 code works here in North America through Vonage. 1471 does not work on other phone systems in North America though. |

I called customer services and they were able to "make anonymous" my service. Which stops you having to do *67 on a call by call basis. |

Well, after being told that by the techy I found that it was not working so I called them again, quoting the last person who was supposed to have "made anonymous" my service permanently. They said it could not be done and apologised! Quite disappointing. |

Yes - I know I was told the same thing - first of all they could do it - then they couldn't |
