I recently subscribed in the area code 902. My number givin to me was in the 482 exchange . I have the same area code but live in the 742 exchange. All calls I make are ok but the problem is when anyone calls me locally even next door they are told it is long distance. I have called the help line but got some duffus who didn't know what I was talking about.. I have emailed them 6 times with no response.
Can someone help me in finding out the solution to this problem.
Thanks |

Not much you can do unless Vonage has an exchange in your area |

Hi Powerman,
I can help you but I am not sure that you will like what I am going to say. So make sure you are sitting down.
742 is an exchange in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia. However, 482 is an exchange in Halifax, Nova Scotia. People living in Halifax can call you toll free because you have a Halifax number. Vonage is quite new to Canada and to start they appeared to set up shop in the capital cities, or major cities of several provinces. Halifax is the capital of Nova Scotia, and as a result they are currently only offering Halifax numbers. You cannot obtain a Yarmouth number at this time. When you signed up under Nova Scotia, it should have said "902-Halifax".
That was your bad news.
The good news is that they have been saying that they are going to continue to add different cities over time. How much time? I don't think that Vonage even has that answer yet. I'm just guessing, but it probably depends on the number of people requesting service in the other communities and may also depend on how well they continue to do in Canada. I know that Vonage has switched phone numbers for free when new communities opened up. In other words, if the 742 exchange does become available, you should have no problem having your 482 number switched to a 742 number for free.

It's great if you call long distance. It will give you 500 minutes for $19.95 per month to call anywhere in the US or Canada. That's pretty good. Plus you can receive for free unlimited incoming calls, and people in Halifax can call you toll free. |

I had the same problem, I live in 905 area, got 905 area code from Vonage. But when people with in the same area code call me they get warning that call is long distance. I called Vonage Representative, the matter was solved on spot. |

That must have been a different matter. The earlier email states that the customer lives in Yarmouth, but has a Halifax number. Yarmouth is about 380 KM from Halifax. That is definitely a long distance call! |
