I should have mentioned that Vonage have extended my free trial whilst we've been trying to get the phone ringing problem sorted, and they have given me one month credit for helping them out with the solution.

Thank you Vonage!

Quote from Vonage Technical - "Thank you so much for the information you provided, I will definitely pass this along to our QA department and let them know of this. I truly appreciate your assistance. I have place a courtesy credit for a month on your account."

Had the same problem here.

Issue is that (most) UK phones do not have a capacitor internally connected to the line; US phones do. You need a capacitor in the line to make it ring. Same thing happens with your DSL line. DSL master socket has no capacitor in it, so to make your phone work, you need to add one externally. This is accomplished with the DSL "micro filter".

Simple solution to your problem... take a DSL microfilter, plug it into the back of the Vonage router, plug your phone into the micro filter, and voila. Rings aplenty.

Have to really castigate Vonage on this one. First, they are complete knuckleheads not to have realised this. Did they even test their system over here before launching? Second, I spent my entire friday night trying to figure this out, with their "customer support" only exacerbating the problem. First attempt (30 min on hold) they told me the problem was with my firewall and I had to open a bunch of ports. With much fiddling with my router/modem settings, I tried this and it did not work. Thinking I did something wrong, more time on the phone with netgear and linksys customer support. 2nd attempt at Vonage customer support (35 min on hold), they said that some UK phones have different wiring and directed me to this site (I have heard of this, some RJ11 jacks us pins 2/5 and others use 3/4). Much cutting and splicing and one perfectly good phone later, no joy. Finally, with a nights' sleep to think about it, I though the capacitor was the issue. It was..... And it took 30 seconds to fix....

Vonage, please get your act together -- 1) supply a proper adaptor with a capacitor (perhaps 2, one with, one without); and 2) train your customer support personnel to address this issue.

Ditto here with the lack of ring..

After speaking with a few hit'n'miss Tech support people, I got a chap who after checking a few things admitted that the intial batch of Routers sent out have a known problem with them i.e the dont ring.

The official solution until they fix the Routers is as above.. add a standard off the shelf microfilter that comes with most ADSL (UK spec) modems. Just plug this into line 1 before your phone and it should now work.

The new routers they send out wont need this he said, although sheepish on the specifics on wether they'll replace the Router with a new model or wether they'll just add a filter in the box..

The other point is that they will credit your account with the price of Microfilters, call them, tell them the problem, they'll mark your account for you to call back and give them the price.

i had the same problem at first with my phones they where all bt phones that didnt ring i was then advised to try phones other than bt ones so i tried a phone from my neighbour which was panasonic with a built in caller id display that did ring ok so i then went out the next day just bought a cheap phone cos i didnt wasnt to spend alot of money incase it didnt work either so i ended up buying a binatone caller id speakerphone was around £16 plugged that in and it worked fine.

but i have just had a laugh after reading the posts above i just plugged in a micro filter and tried the first bt phone that didnt work before and its now ringing ok lol

Cheers Gordy

Just got my box this morning. They're still shipping the same router, without a microfilter, and my BT Converse 180 is refusing to cooperate. I'm a Telewest Cable customer too, so I don't even have any microfilters lying around! Now that this problem has been identified for them, shouldn't they be doing something about it? If they're not going to include filters, they could at least stick a note in the box explaining the situation..

Apart from that, everything's working great, after a trouble-free installation behind my Linksys BEFW11S4. Very happy so far. Fingers crossed.

(Btw, I borrowed a BT Freestyle 2200 cordless phone to test it out, and it rings no problem, presumably because it's sucking power from the mains).

if you have a problem with phone not ringing contact Vonage customer service by email or phone and they will arrange to post you a microfilter that will solve the ringing problem.

When I moved back to the UK I brought over my US Vonage modem and I had a similar problem, I could only solve it by using a US phone instead of a UK phone. I just ordered a UK service and I am waiting on my UK modem, Vonage said it would work with a UK phone, I guess I will soon find out.

I have Linksys router, 2 PCs connected and 1 phone.

I could not get the phone to ring. I forgot that I'd read this thread and called Vonage technical support.

After spending seemingly hours going from one person to another who each thought they could fix the problem, and where the sound quality was absolutely awful - I hoped this wasnt an example of good Voice over IP! - I gave up (after being left on hold for about 10 mins). *and I thought NTL customer phone service was awful!

The next day I called back and got someone else - better sound quality, someone in the States it seemed to me. By now I had reread this thread, and mentioned that I thought an ADSL microfilter would fix the problem.

I was told either I could get one and it would fix the problem. or they'd send me a new adapter. So I chose the new adapter (ie less hassle) and they gave me a credit on my account for my pain Very Happy

Now having received the adapter (not a new router, just the phone adapter that goes from small plug socket to big plug socket) (Technical terms Eek ). The new one has 4 wires in it. The old one had two.

Anyway, so my BT Converse 250 now rings ok.

But my BT Synergy 2110 doesn't - unfortunately the phone I use all the time.

er... any ideas? Is it definitely the ADSL microfilter required? What more does this give?

much appreciated.

Ian

As as quick aside...
My phones didn't ring, so I added a microfilter. One worked, one didn't, so I obviously use the one that does. However, it rings in the American style of one long ring, then a pause, then one long ring, instead of the UK way of two short rings, pause, two short rings etc. Is this normal for Vonage or can I get it to be the UK ringer? I'm not all that fussed, but wondered what other people's experience was.

i am surprised that your converse 2110 phone doesnt ring. with the new adapter there is no reason why it shouldn't. try and use the adsl microfilter with the converse 2110 and let the forum know if it works
