Hi,

Just wanted to share a success story. I've had Vonage for about 3 weeks. Although I did get it setup quickly, there were a number of common issues that I did not realize would be problematic.

One was noise on the line (Linksys RT31P2). I found the thread about the dongle (made a pretty nice one with a gel-spice), and beautiful silence followed.

The other was my (ADT) alarm system. I was so used to having this I did not even consider it to be an issue until it was too late. I called Vonage and they reduced the packet size, but it still did not work.

Well, thanks to the information here (and http://www.vonage-forum.com/home-wiring-installation-guide.html ), I was able to wire it correctly (run new phone line & install new jacks as well) and I am happy to say, my alarm system is fully functional! Phone check reports "ok" and ADT verified they are getting the status calls. Power outage is not a problem either since I have an A/C inverter connected to a deep-cycle marine battery (built for a sump-pump backup) that will power my cable modem and routers in the event of a power failure.

Surprisingly I never had any problem faxing via my fax/modem.

Things are good for me in Vonage land -- quiet, secure, and faxy. Thanks to everyone for all the great advice here.

It pays off to use google before complaining. There is an answer to almost anything on the web now days.

Glad you are rockin! A few more things I can tell you. For your phone's MWI (Message Waiting Indicitaor) to function correctly you need to ask tech support to adjust your config. What will happen if you dont is the status will never clear. Thats what I was experiencing until they adjusted it.

If any of the people you speak to mention you sound soft or faded tech support can also raise your output volume to correct it.

If you have multiple phones and are having any problems with some of them not ringing properly they can also raise your ring voltage to solve that.

I read about all this here and had them adjust all 3 at once. Man did it ever make a difference.

Thanks for the extra tips... much appreciated.

I've set the voicemail to a fairly long delay, so *usually* my home answering machine picks up first -- I hardly ever get the stutter tone. No ringing problems (I only have 3 phone hooked up) and so far no complaints on the volume, but I'll keep these in mind the next time I'm on with T.S.

Thanks again!

I've been a Vonage user since October, and I tell ya -- I'm a "Religious" Vonager too. Thier most expensive plan is still LESS than the residential plan I had before. Plus, what a great way to use some of that bandwidth from your High Speed ISP, right?

A lot of people do comment on having thier alarm systems hooked up with Vonage. One common way to bypass an alarm is to cut the phone wires before attempting to break into a residence or other building. With Vonage, this is a good way to have a redundancy in that case. How many criminals would take that much longer to cut the cable TV/Internet cable coming into your house, right? Hahahaha.

I still contend that most burgulars will avoid a house with an alarm sign in the first place. If they have to go to the trouble of cutting ouside wires in hopes of disabling an alarm, they will be more likely to go for an easier/safer target.

If that were true, I wouldn't have gone to all the trouble to rewire my phone lines to make it work with Vonage in the first place Smile.

Like to see them try it Twisted Evil
