I've been a Vonage Customer for over a year. I'm very happy with the service but my wife complains about the Echo off and on. She's not ready to quit Vonage but I'd like to fix this problem once and for all.

I'm going to look into getting another wireless phone for our house with echo cancellation but I was wondering why this technology wasn't built into my adaptor.

My adaptor is the old Cisco ATA. Is it possible that there's an update or another adaptor with this technology built in?

My ISP is Earthlink (Time Warner).
I don't know what kind of cable modem I have.

As I understand it the echo is the retransmission of the local audio by the remote end. When the latency is increased the echo has more delay and becomes more annoying. This latency is agravated by the nature of Voip but may also be agravated by the remote equipment or lines or by the wireless phone I have hooked up to it.

Since latency is something I can't really do anything about (the problem may be on the remote end) I assume that the echo cancelling technology was my only real hope. So I'm looking to get a update for my adaptor, or maybe replace either my phone, or the adaptor.

Am I looking at the right place?

I have a lynksys G router hooked to a cable modem. All my computers and my adapters connect to the same lynksys Router.

have you tired it with a different phone? preferably wired if you have one.
can you not look at your modem?

I have an old handset. We called a number we always get the problem with and it echoed (maybe not as bad).

so it apparently only happens with certain numbers? can you narrow it down to say, the same exchange or same area code? or perhaps the same provider?

Yeah, it doesn't happen all the time but there are some numbers we can dial where we can almost count on it. (I'm using these to test my future solution whatever it is).

I've also seen some of the other threads but they don't seem like there getting there.

On the Internet I've found some articles on filtering out echo but it's most commonly implemented at a PBX I guess (found some rack mount units). I've also found alot on the problem but not what I'm looking for.

I found out the Cisco ATA 188 has a built in web server. I've never tried to access it but I wonder what kind of options it has (or if I should mess with them).

Also according to Cisco this adaptor has built in Echo Cancelling Technology in it.
