I have my RT31P2 plugged into the back of my MS router which is a wireless router with 4 ports. When I tried to plugged the RT31P2 the modem and plug the MS router to the Linksys I do not get any internet. I have 4 PCs and a laptop running off the MS router on wireless.

Right now I get GREAT phone connection but I cannot get into the Linksys the same way I can into the MS router.

My MS router assigned the Linksys a new IP address.

Thanks I was able to access the RT31P2 using another PC connected to it but not able to access it from the main PC logged into the MS router. I did follow your steps but since I can manage the router using another PC that is OK. Thanks for your help.

Most likely the problem is due to the fact that on your M$ router you have "DHCP" server enabled. If your Linksys router is the first router in the link... ie. Cable Modem --> Linksys ---> MS router ---> computers, then you do not need to, and should not have DHCP enabled under the configuration settings for your MS router. Also, if it is wireless, you'll want to change your Wireless routers settings from "Wireless Router" to "Access Point" settings. This will allow your Linksys router to govern all of the IP address assignments to your computer, and all of your computers that are connected to your MS router will pass through it as if it was just a hub. Allow me to illustrate again;

Cable Modem--->Linksys (in router mode w/ DHCP enabled) ---> MS Router (DHCP disabled, Access Point Mode enabled)

This setup will lead to the least amount of conflicts. I run a Microsoft Wireless Basestation as well too, and can attest to that Smile

My setup is Modem, MS and Linksys

I have 2 PCs that use the wireless to access the MS router, 1 notebook, 1 connected to the MS and and one connected to the Linksys.

Then your setup will be like this;

Cable Modem ---> MS router (DHCP enabled, normal wireless router mode) ---> Linksys router (DHCP disabled). I hope that helps.

Thanks...I tried the other way Modem, Linksys and MS and that did not work at all...had a rough time getting internet connection.

So would I still use the IP address 192.168.15.1 to access the Linksys when I disable the DHCP

I had to reset my Linksys because I was not getting any incoming calls...I always test to make sure all incoming and outgoing calls are OK.

So I am just gonna keep the set up I have and stop messing with it.

Modem...MS...Linksys

Was told by my cousin that QOS is better if I had the Linksys before the MS

But since I have been messing around with it and not getting anywhere I will leave it alone for now.

All in all...I am happy with my Vonage.

For what it's worth, I just received my router last night and had a couple of hiccups before getting everything to play nice on my little network.

Before I went for Vonage, I had something like this set up:

Code:

Cable modem <---> Netgear 614 <---> Netgear 8-port  <---> My machines,
                  wired router          switch             printer
                       |
                       |
                      \ /
                  Wife's iBook

To make use of QoS, I shoved the linksys router in between my cable modem and my old router. I would have ditched the old router altogether, but keeping it made life a little easier for physical location reasons as well as the fact that my wife likes having the light on the netgear router come on to show her activity to/from her iBook. The blinky lights are bigger on the netgear.

I disabled DHCP on the netgear router and connected it up to the linksys not by the WAN port on the netgear but just by one of the 4 switch ports. I also had to explicitly tell it to stop taking 192.168.15.1 as its IP (thus screwing up access to the linksys) - it didn't seem to play too nicely with DHCP, so I told it to bugger off and take address 50 instead, and it settled down fairly well.
