I am going to get my dad to switch his biz number over soon. He is wondering what happens when the number is transferred. What is the message that it says then you call it or will if foward it to the virtual number automatically. Thanks.

When you sign up for service and at the time of signup indicate a phone transfer your phone will have the same number. A virtual number is assigned at that point for you to use but once the number is transferred from the local provider, the virtual number is dropped.

You may want to read some of the other threads before you encourage your Dad to switch. Interruptions of service on home phones is a nuisance, but interruptions of service on business lines can be very costly.

I believe Vonage will work out these issues in time, but right now reliability appears to be an issue.

As a start, maybe he should sign up for Vonage (using the virtual number), but keep his POTS with its current business number. I believe you can always transfer the number later.

I just sat on the "help" line for over 1/2 hr and then it forced me to a voice mail.. I know that Vonage is trying.. but this is absolutely nuts.. With the level of poor service I'm seeing there is NO way I would recommend Vonage (or any other Voip) service.
I've asked for them to return my call today.. if the problems ar not fixed (today).. This service is getting tossed and a new Verizon hard line is coming in. I can't waste my time on somebody'd great experiment. At first I thought there is really something here.. but I do not believe Vonage can overcome the local ISP broadband issues (out of their control) and Internet issues in general without expending a LOT of $$$ and energy. This stuff is NOT ready for prime time and I'm doubting it ever will be. If it were my business I'd close the door and cut my losses.

Transferring my business number took about three weeks and several calls to both Vonage and Verizon. Aggrivating.

But since then, it's been flawless. I knew going in there would be trouble, because (as my telecom prof liked to say) no single person alive today completely understands the current public telephone system. The trouble with Vonage is (IMHO) mostly related to their interfacing with the phone system, not with the Internet side.

I've had technical, support, and billing trouble with every service Verizon offers -- local phone, DSL, and mobile. With the exception of installers and line workers, their staff are incompetent, lazy, and rude.

Don't tell Vonage this, but I'm willing to put up with quite a bit in order to rid myself of any relationship with Verizon.
