I have had Vonage for a while and I have always seen commercials on tv as I have satellite however recently I went to my aunts house and she has regular cable TV and noticed a Vonage commercial. This leads me to believe that Vonage would be extending in our area. The question is how to tell for certain? I live in a smaller area (panhandle of florida) We use the 850 area code which should be relevant for destin, pensacola, fort walton beach, all the way to tallahasse. Any ideas how I can tell for sure? People in my area get agravated having to call a different area code wasiting money just to reach us and most here dont have broadband.

I don't know the official answer, but low broadband adoption may be indicative as to how quickly your area is put on the list.

Well I know theres one provider that offers 850, won't list it here since this is a Vonage forum. I also believe my provider COX offers Voip or (Digital phone service) my guess is they are similar somehow? I dunno.

The question of how to tell where Vonage offers numbers, and where not, and how soon they can be expected, seems like a good one to me. Vonage did recently start offering numbers in my area code, and I have signed up with them but they do not offer numbers that are local to my prefix. I have no way to know how soon they will do so. This means I cannot consider LNP, nor forward incoming calls from a POTS line to my Vonage line in an affordable way.

Well I ordered Vonage originally for my self just to have my own line. My mother was paying rediculous bills and after seeing how Voip really was (I figured it was either some cisco phone with a RJ45 jack instead of a rj10 or some Voip software to dial out) it seemed like a bill saver. I looked it up on howstuffworks and one of the links mentioned was Vonage, they looked like a good company plus were cheap so I signed up. I read more about Voip but it looked like 911 was lacking on most providers, even had trouble activating on Vonage originally. I heard a horror story and the reliability scared me. Anyways my mother tried my phone because she heard I had free long distance then kept asking "your sure it won't charge me? How do you know? How can it only be 25 dollars a month?" she didn't believe me. I had to physically show her where the phone line was connected into showing it was all done via the internet on a broadband connection. The only downside was no area code but we do have our old area code from chicago "847" so she likes that her friends can call her from chicago and that she can call them free. I'm just hoping they get 850 soon, I won't change my number but I will add a 850 number as a virtual number.
