We've had Vonage for almost two years and the voice quality was great until January 2005. Each time the voice quality starts "motorboating" we check our DSL connection -- the issue is clearly 100% Vonage vs with our ISP.

We have not had any luck reaching Vonage tech support. Hopefully some good competitors will show up soon and we can switch from Vonage---which is a shame for the Vonage stockholders who pioneered Voip that (once) worked.

If I was a Vonage stockholder, I would call immediately for Jeff Citron's resignation and the same for any Director that supports him. He may have been good for a startup, but he clearly cannot handle operations at their current level.

My humble opinion - [1 year user now - three lines]

Take a 6 hour and 12 hour ping plot. Forward to your ISP tech support if it shows problems/latency.
Keep forwarding it until you get a response. BrightHouse actually admitted that there was a problem with one of my friends installations.


If the plots or line quality tests show it is not your ISP - it is possible you have an ATA going bad. This too, happened to me last year. A 20 minute phone call could guarantee a dropped call (I could hear them - they could not hear me).

For poops and giggles I returned my adapter and got another one.... not a problem since. I have since bought a spare - Vonage can move your account to a new adapter in a snap.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think Vonage is currently a private company. Can you actually buy stocks for Vonage? It is news to me if you can.

Plans to possible go public this year... I assume there are "private" stockholders at this point, likely normal joe like u and I cannot get in on these.

I have to agree -- recently I haven't been able to get any support, and we're now getting blocked/dropped calls regularly. *123 wasn't working and I e-mailed support 2 times (only automated answer, no follow up). Finally got ahold of someone to help me today after 45 minutes on the phone. Turns out there's these hidden codes like 9 - 9 (turns off whether you have to enter the mailbox when you *123). <sigh>

I like Vonage (at least the concept), and really want it to work since it in theory will save
$$$ (I have a business line and a personal line). I hope they can get there service level back up (both in support and QoS). I dislike Verizon as well, so with the choices I really have to choose from I'll stay with Vonage for now. I'm hoping its just the Superbowl commercials etc. and that they can ramp back up.

While Vonage has problems, I think a lot of the issues are related to people not having their OS properly configured for cable or DSL. Go here:

(this works for cable too).

Use the tweak tool, answer the questions on the resulting page. and follow the recommendations. Be sure to reboot after changing things.

You may be happier.

If certain parameters are set incorrectly (particularly RWIN), you are going to get packet re-transmits and dropped packets, and lousy speeds. All of that will adversely affect Voip quality. Windows 9X and ME by default do not have the correct settings. XP and 2K may or may not have them depending on your ISP's settings.

It's worth checking, since it costs nothing, is easy to do, and may help.
