Ok I got my Vonage Linksys in the mail on friday 2/4, I currently run Verizon DSL, with the new Westell Versalink 327W which is both a modem and wireless router.

I am having a config problem , the way i have it hooked up now, I cannot use the wireless capablity of it, and if it change it, it does one of two things either i have wireless and no Vonage, or if i switch the wires back, i have Vonage and cable connected internet, but not wireless. it seems like it then just is using it as a router.. Anyone think of a fix for this, I did notice when i boot up my laptop its showing the MAC address now, so im not sure if that is also part of the problem.. I have tried two different ways to go in and configure both the Versalink and the Linksys Broadband router, and im stuck, seems like only one or the other will let me go in and change the router settings.. any suggestions welcomed!

Before getting your Linksys RT31P2 adapter from Vonage, did you have an open ethernet port on your combo modem/wireless router?

If so, don't change anything from the way you had your system and devices set up before. Just plug the Linksys RT31P2 into the open ethernet port on the Westell and don't use the ethernet ports on the RT31P2 for any PCs or other devices that you want to be able to see on your local area network. Leave all your other PCs and devices plugged into the Westell or using its wireless service.

I have a similar setup with a combo modem/wireless/router but my combo is a Linksys WCG200 and my service is cable rather than DSL.

If that does not work, you may need to do some port forwarding or putting the RT31P2 in a DMZ -- but don't bother with any of that until you have verified that it won't work right out of the box. I did not have to change any of that.

Good luck. Let us know how you do.

You shouldn't need to change any defaults on the Linksys given the setup you have. You can't use the QoS because you're behind the other router/wireless, which is already allocating bandwidth to your PCs. Don't worry, unless you have low bandwidth and do a lot of downloading, that won't matter. I have good voice quality with no dropouts, and I don't use QoS in a setup very similar to yours.

yes it always blinks when you're on a call.
if you look in your user guide that came with the device, or here:
ftp://ftp.linksys.com/pdf/rt31p2_ug.pdf
on page 8 it says:
"It flashes when the phone is being used or an incoming call has been
detected."

That's not good. Sad

The problem could be caused by insufficient bandwidth, because of PCs and other devices using the system at the same time as your call. If you could put the Linksys in front of your other router, QoS would help with that -- but you can't do that because your modem and router are combined (like mine).

Another possible cause of the problem could be that your modem is dropping packets -- a very common problem with some modems. I'm not familiar with your modem, so I don't know whether that is likely to be the problem. How old is it? Do you have the latest firmware for it?

Another potential source of the drop outs is that there is network congestion downstream of you on the Internet -- a problem you can't correct but which would hopefully be temporary.

You can run a Voip speed test at: http://www.vonage-forum.com/voip-speed-test . Let's see what you get.

If the problem is drop outs, I would think the Linksys adapter is probably not at fault. But you can't rule out that possibility either.

Another possible source of the drop out is the phone instrument itself. Are you using a wireless phone in the 2.4ghz band? If so, interference from your wireless unit, microwave, your neighbors' wireless units, etc. can cause your wireless phone to loose the signal between its base and handset. If that is the problem, the solution is to change to a corded phone or a cordless phone in the older 900 mhz range. (The cordless phones that are rated at 5.8 ghz still use 2.4 ghz for one direction, so they may not completely fix a problem with interference.)

If you are using a 2.4ghz cordless phone, you should move it as far away from your modem/router/wireless combo and your microwave as is feasible.
