Is Vonage now offering a wireless router built in with their ATA?

Not that I know of. I use a Linksys WCG200, which is a combo modem/wireless-G access point/router with cable internet. I then plug the Linksys RT31P2 into that, but I don't use the routing capabilities or ethernet ports of the RT32P. Of course, that means I can't use Qos on the RT31P2, but I have 1.5 in both directions on a very stable cable service. I don't need the QoS.

The original poster uses a different brand modem/wireless/router combo, but essentially has a setup similar to mine -- except she is using DSL instead of cable and may not have as much bandwidth available.

I saw a note here on this forum that Vonage is planning on offering a Wireless-G/router/phone adapter in the future, but I can't confirm that.

Ladyinfinity,

If you think you might have a bandwidth problem, you could go onto the dashboard on your account at Vonage and lower the quality setting to use lower bandwidth. I can't tell much difference in quality with a lower setting.

That's not good. Sad

The problem could be caused by insufficient bandwidth, because of PCs and other devices using the system at the same time as your call. If you could put the Linksys in front of your other router, QoS would help with that -- but you can't do that because your modem and router are combined (like mine).

Another possible cause of the problem could be that your modem is dropping packets -- a very common problem with some modems. I'm not familiar with your modem, so I don't know whether that is likely to be the problem. How old is it? Do you have the latest firmware for it?

Another potential source of the drop outs is that there is network congestion downstream of you on the Internet -- a problem you can't correct but which would hopefully be temporary.

You can run a Voip speed test at: http://www.vonage-forum.com/voip-speed-test . Let's see what you get.

If the problem is drop outs, I would think the Linksys adapter is probably not at fault. But you can't rule out that possibility either.

Ok here is what I got, besides it saying i can run 5 phones.

My Results
Download 1,420,624 bps
Upload 379,080 bps
QOS 80%
RTT 80 ms
MaxPause 79 ms

And no, not running a cordless phone.

It looks like you've got plenty of bandwidth. Since that is not the problem, and since you are not using a cordless phone, I'd say that leaves two likely causes of the drop outs you experienced: (1) your modem is dropping packets sporadically, or (2) you had some temporary Internet congestion between you and Vonage.

(One more thought. If the problem occured while calling a cell phone, the problem might have been on the cellular end!)

If the drop out problem continues on a regular basis, you should see about updating the firmware on your modem or replacing it. If you replace it, you'll either need to get another combo (like the Linksys WCG200 that I have) or separate units for a modem and wireless access point. The Vonage RT31P2 will serve fine as the router.

Let's hope your problem was just caused by Internet congestion and that you're good to go.

Best of luck.

darkev: do you mean as an option when you sign up or just in general? if it's in general there is the WRT54GP2 which is a wireless router. you can't get it direct from Vonage though.

just a thought, have you tried testyourvoip.com (detailed results)? that gives some good info on packet discards and loss. you also might want to run www.pingplotter.com for a period of time to see packet loss.

My results from tesyourvoip.

Alternate Port Results The test agent could not connect to Boston using the standard SIP port (5060), but was able to connect and run a test to another location via an alternate port (6000). This indicates that one of the following may be true:
If you have a Voip Service, your VoIP/Phone Adaptor may have reserved the standard SIP port and is filtering out our SIP packets. Consider temporarily removing the Adaptor from your configuration and re-running the test.
Your Personal Firewall, if you are using Windows XP, may be filtering the SIP port used for communication.
Either your home firewall or your broadband provider's firewall is blocking the SIP port used for communication.
You should consider investigating these settings and trying the test again.

Ps i do not have a firewall up..

yeah it's been having problems lately. I'm not sure if it's intermittent or constant. keep trying or I think there are some packet loss or line tests at dslreports.com.

That is interesting! So I can purchase one of these WRT54GP2 Routers/ATAs and Vonage will acknowledge it on their system?
