Speaking of encryption... Do you or anyone you know at least digitally sign all of their emails? Doing something like this would stop spam in its tracks. All email clients or ISPs could have a rule that if an email did not have a valid digital signature, it is rejected (or moved into another folder, etc...). You get the idea. It seems the basic system is in place. No need for Microsoft (the King of Internet Security??) to come to us with their digital caller id plans. Maybe if the techies started to embrace such a practice within our community, it would extend out to the genpop.

Personally, I do and everyone I communicate with (via e-mail) will receive an encrypted message from moi. If they do not understand it then I explain, etc etc etc. Eventually, with my persistence they begin using it as well.

I use KMail (*nix-based) which utilizes encryption quite well (and easy). I may be wrong but every "main-stream" e-mail client I currently know about does support encryption and signing. If one does not, then it should be slapped around a bit (Bad e-mail client! Bad Client!) along with their developers. They have also made it semi-easy to install and use the certificates/signatures, as well. Unfortunately, more often than not the set-up screen is buried beneath the 15,000th window on the 24th tab of the 18th button of the . . .

A good thing about the whole topic is there are many larger (Fortune 500 even) companies beginning to use, at least, signing on all their messages. In the words of the most famous of those in her class..."It's a good thing"

I agree. I do not feel there needs to be some sort of new "digital caller-id" system created as we already have it (in a sense): digital signatures! Like you, I feel it all boils down to a lack of education on the issue with the general populous. (and education about the proper way to manage cookies, too!) The programmers have all known about this sort of technology for years. Now, perhaps, they could let the lay-man in on it? Oooops...excuse me...lay-person (sorry, couldn't resist). Wink

Do you know of any webmail clients (php, hosted, or otherwise) that allow you to use a digital signature?

I give away all of my invites to the gmail spooler. they used to be at a premium but now there's almost 1.5 million available. nevertheless, it's a good way to get rid of them. also, to answer your orignial question, I gave all 50 away on feb 7th and I have 50 more today.

I do know that SquirrelMail supports PGP signatures and encryption... http://www.squirrelmail.org/plugin_view.php?id=153

but can not think of any ISP's right off that use it, though I have seen it widely used in corporate environments. I'm sure there are some out there. If you have your own domain and server you could set up an MX record and use this system yourself...hmmm

Anyhow, I also believe CommuniGate Pro supports PGP and S/MIME although I've never knowingly seen the system in use.

As far as the current "big boys" out there...I know of none (Hotmail, Lycos, Yahoo, etc.). GMail has stated they are working on / talking about support for it.

The person that send the invitation will get a system reply back stating that you have created the account with such-and-such name. And, yup, you can make it basically anything you want . . . speckledduckbillplatipus@gmail.com (would that work?)

Eek
