Ok here is my story:

I have had the Vonage service for almost two weeks, I have not been successfull using the phone while surfing the web. Generally the other party loses my voice, but occasionally I also lose theirs. My current setup is:

Rochester TimeWarner Roadrunner service
Toshiba PCX1100U cable modem
Netgear FVS318R Prosafe router

I have gone through 3 routers:
Nexland 800 turbo
Linksys BEFRS41
Linksys BEFRS81 (the one with QOS)
and finally the current Netgear FVS318

I have gone through 2 Cable Modems:
Terayon TJ110
and the current Toshiba PCS1100u

The problem of lost sound (on either side of the conversation) has persisted through all of the hardware. I have not other problems surfing the web and get 340kbps u/l 1600-2000kpbs when checking vonage's speed test. I have bandwidth saver enabled.

I have also run pingplotter between here and and get little or no packet loss and latency ~50ms.

I have tried forwarding the ports as mentioned in other posts, I have tried putting the ATA on the dmz. None of this has made a difference. I can not try another brand of cable modem as TimeWarner in this area does not provision modems (they require you to use their own).

In calling tech support, they tried to change one of the udp ports from 5060 to 5061, no help. They offered to run a tcpdump, but only a supervisor can run this, and there don't seem to be any supervisors around when I call. Needless to say I have spent hours (mostly on hold) with tech support. I am hoping I can hookup with someone there today that can run the tcpdump and give me more info.

The tech support says they have no reported problemd with these cable modems (rca yes, not these).

Can anyone offer any suggestions? I would be interested in hearing form anyone successgully using Vonage in the timewarner/rochester area.

My current setup is:

Rochester TimeWarner Roadrunner service
Toshiba PCX1100U cable modem

This might be your issue. Can TW provide you with a decent modem, like a Motorola surfboard (SB4200)?

No, they only deal in the Toshiba modems (1100 and 2200). I had purchased a sb5200 from the local CC only to find out they would not activate it.

I finally received my Packet 8 setup (that I had ordered at the same time as the Vonage pkg). In all Packet 8 works much better, (1 or two dropped calls, but no loss of audio when surfing the web. I would like to stay with Vonage though, because when it works it does have better voice quality and better features all around. Vonage is sending me another ATA to see if that was the problem.

I signed up for Vonage about a week ago and almost gave up with trying to get it to work. I could not even get a dial tone wiith any of the suggested tricks even with tech support. Then I got thinking about the way things work. I have a Belkin router and VisionNet DSL modem. My problem turned out to be the router but since my home network is wired and wireless I did not want to buy a new router. If you look at the settings of your modem and see if DHCP is enabled, if it is you can hook up a cheap Netgear switch. Go from the modem to the uplink port of the switch then go from one port of the switch to your Cisco ATA and use another port of the switch to goto your router. Then what happens is your ATA is outside your router and it gets a 10 dot ip from your modem your computers on your network get their IPs from the router and you still the full protection of the firewall in your router because you did not have to open any ports. Which in my case did not work anyway nor did putting the ATA in the DMZ of my router. This setup works really slick and so does my Vonage. Everything works really cool and the quality of the sound is outstanding! Hope this helps

I set my sound quality to "Normal" and have no had the problem of dropping voice since. This is voice over IP and it's not always forgiving. Just because you have no PINGs being dropped doesn't mean that you can sustain 90Kb worth of PINGs with very low latency. The problem seems to be more on the uplink side. The cable modem provider limits uplink speeds and it seems that a blip of congestion is the culprit.

Works fine now though...
